  1. Old Eagle Scout and new Lion Dad here... I’m jumping back into scouting with a kindergarten daughter. That’s not something I would have ever dreamed of when I was a scout, and I couldn’t be more excited. Scouting absolutely prepared me for life... and the Air Force Academy, 7 years on active duty, 4 (and counting) in the reserves, Wall Street, and everything in between. What else provides kids an opportunity to camp, hike, shoot, swim, sail, ride... and learn to lead and be good people along the way? If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the right place. It’s only been a few w

  2. I share your sentiments. Scouting isn't just an activity to me; it's a lifestyle. It is character development, it is patriotism and citizenship, it is outdoor skills, it is leadership, it is service to other, it is finding out who you are and what you're capable of, it is a worldwide mission and organization that recognizes and honors our differences and unites us in our many similarities. I don't see similar opportunities from soccer, karate, or piano, or at least not for the particular son I have. My cousins were MP in the Air Force. Stationed in Japan, Qatar, and Nebraska. 3. Have you bought your adult uniform yet? Might as well, it's just a matter of time if the Pack finds out you're an Eagle Scout, you'll find yourself "volunteered" for a uniformed position real soon. 😄 Welcome back!

  4. Every "style" is an alternative. Like the carny barker said, "ya pays yer money and takes yer cherce". What we are doing, methinks, is making sure our Scouts understand better the choices. The 'alternatives'. And the results of those choices. Some folks call it 'Karma', I guess.

  6. Join scouts. My wife and I were going through old photographs and there was a pile from when my son was a webelo and a young boy scout. I vaguely remember when he was a tiger cub. He's 29 now and takes his dogs up 14000' mountains. While I still cherish my time with him he'll never sit in my lap again. Most all of scouting is at the unit level and so all the politics and rehashing of perceived mistakes can be ignored. Shanah Tova.

  7. In any group/organization/association/club.... there are the ideals, the goals, the "official" reasons for the organization's existence , and then there is the reality of what happens. The people that define the organization (US Constitution? US populace?) are what make the ideals, the goals achievable. Or betray them.... BSA (and , I dare say, other Scout associations around the world) has that situation. So do Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Boys/Girls Clubs, Soccer Clubs, swim teams, gymnastics schools, public Schools, private schools, equestrian rings, and bird watching groups

  8. This is the part of the forum to welcome new members. Coming into this forum and telling a new, enthusiastic parent that: Is just picking on a new member. You want to have that conversation, go over to Issues and Politics and we can hash that out again. I think we've had that conversation there 10 or 20 times now. I'm not even going to get into the merits of your argument here because the "New to the Forum" section where someone else is introducing themselves isn't the place for that.

  9. Oh for-pete's-sake, you might have shown some integrity if you stopped at "I am not here to change your mind." But, you couldn't hold to your word. You had to try and change her mind. Shesh! Be a better role model. Please! Barry

  10. @SemperParatus you've got quite the tenure here! Thanks for your service to Scouting, past or present. That being said, you clearly aren't happy with the BSA for untold reasons. So why are you still participating here? Don't you have something better to do?

  11. I've seen no COs disassociate from the BSA in the past few years. This is simply not true. Everyone involved knows that the bankruptcy is related to actions many years ago and is not representative of actions of the BSA today.

  12. I'm so old, I can remember when this was about adult family members being one to one with child family members.

  14. His amazement isn't so much that "this is how things are suppose to work", it is that this was our AoL/crossover patrol that picked up and ran with it right from the start in the middle of a pandemic. THAT is amazing.

  15. Paperwork for rechartering needs to be filed in 12 hours, I still haven't signed. Nor do I plan to. I'm more than a little melancholy but since it will have been exactly 50 years next week since I first put on a boyscout uniform, I guess I shouldn't complain. Been a long fun filled trail. " The road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began, but I at last with weary feet, turn toward the lighted inn. My evening rest and sleep to meet"

  16. Unfortunately, scouting has become an alternative lifestyle.

  17. Welcome. My advice would be find another activity for your son. Scouting is in a death spiral.

  18. When the BSA is no more...units will no longer exist. Heck, units are disbanding right and left around the country as CO's are compelled to disassociate themselves from the BSA. Why invest energy into an activity that has a very good chance of shutting down in the not too distant future? Fond memories of scouting will not save the BSA (and units).

  19. Mama Llama, If you believe in the mission of scouting and want your son to participate, I am not here to change your mind. That is your and your son's decision. To be brutally honest, I personally would not want to associate with a youth organization that for decades has aided and abetted the sexual molestation of children by covering up such heinous criminal activity. If I had to do it all over again, I and my family would never have become involved with the BSA. Some may say, well that's just a national organization problem, ignoring the fact that virtually all the molestations occu
