  1. IMHO. There have been way too many scouters who think every Eagle project should be something more than a scout and his buddies slapping together a nice looking bench in a public location. I have more trouble with projects that are barn-raisers that take thousands of man-hours where the scout’s hand on the tiller seemed incredibly light.

  2. I'm really disappointed that the discussion immediately went to the legitimacy of this Eagle candidate's advancement. Unless @sri_oa161 has some other info we don't have based on the episode preview, we don't know that the scout did anything questionable whatsoever. The program has allowed for girls to be in long enough at this point to have completed all requirements by the book. We should trust that they did exactly that unless presented with anything to the contrary. Even more so in this case, considering the scout in question was shown in the episode preview with what i assume is her

  3. @SemperParatus you've got quite the tenure here! Thanks for your service to Scouting, past or present. That being said, you clearly aren't happy with the BSA for untold reasons. So why are you still participating here? Don't you have something better to do?

  4. I've seen no COs disassociate from the BSA in the past few years. This is simply not true. Everyone involved knows that the bankruptcy is related to actions many years ago and is not representative of actions of the BSA today.

  5. 1. This season could have done with more preemptive bow-sawing in some parts of the west. 2. It’s sheer folly to judge someone’s mindset, especially a teen’s, based on a statement (probably parroted by adults throughout the scouterverse) clipped from an interview that was no doubt 10 times as long.

  6. We can never have too many well placed and well constructed benches. When you get to my age, that will be more obvious.

  7. I'm so old, I can remember when this was about adult family members being one to one with child family members.

  8. I can't believe I'm saying this but thank you for making the connection between porn and scouts. 😀 Now we're closer to back on track.

  10. This tells me the outside council may believe your council insurance will apply to your unit, even if you go outside of the council. Many beliefs turn out to be incorrect.

  11. Parental waivers may bar suits by parents, but are generally ineffective against suits by minors, unless approved by the court having jurisdiction over the minors - often a "Family Court." Minors have no capability to enter into a contract and parents generally have no power to contract on their children's behalf. Council permission has no effect to bar liability, but lack of permission may be admissible evidence of negligence.

  12. Well, I have some experience in almost this exact situation, including the threat of litigation. Unless the pack has done some kind of harm, there is no litigation. Fred is correct that there are thousands of unit policies hanging out there that nobody knows about because of one-of-kind behavior problems. My best advice is deal with unusual cases individually. In this case, the problem is the parents wanting a dump off place for their son. There really is no easy answer, either babysit a scout that doesn't want to be there, or tell them no. I's a very sad situation that gets worse as

  13. I have a number of thoughts on this, and like the rule they're not going to be completely crystallized. First, in all of this discussion the thing to keep in mind is that the enforcement mechanism for any of this, or said differently, the benefit conferred for compliance with any of this, is continued membership in BSA and to a lesser extent coverage by their insurers for things that may go wrong. BSA is not the only organization that does this. My religion has provisions for excommunication for certain acts, even if those acts occur outside of church or church functions. Lots of empl

  14. She built a bench. Like oh so many Eagle scouts before her. I would love to know how many benches have been built as Eagle scout projects over the years. I see them in virtually every park I've been to over the years, and have had my share of my troop's scouts build them. The number has to be in the tens of thousands. ETA ... and the sore feet and tired legs of a nation, including yours truly, are grateful.

  15. From the Troop 11 History, Houston, Texas (1990), sponsored by First Presbyterian Church. "OSCAR HIBLER BECOMES SCOUTMASTER The troop committee recruited church member Oscar Hibler to become scoutmaster in January 1949. Mr. Hibler had been ASM of Troop 16 at Sutton School. Troop 11 had been without a scoutmaster for three months. When Mr. Hibler took over, Troop 11 had fifteen active scouts and two active visitors. As Mr. Hibler recalls, the boys refused to wear uniforms and only wanted to play. His strong emphasis on scouting principles caused many to leave. Recruitment became a p

  16. I stand corrected. My comment had nothing to do with male/female only timing. I messed up the timing. This year has had me all messed up.

  17. For a female scout who joined right at the beginning (February 2019), the timing is possible. The ranks with “time in grade” require 14 months, plus the time required to attain First Class. Since the beginning of February 2019 there have been approx. 19 months. So, assuming completion of First Class in 5 months, the timing is possible for an very advancement-focused scout. Particularly if the scout involved joined at an older age, and so was motivated by the deadline of aging out (setting aside the potential for extensions), it doesn’t surprise me that there are scouts who have either comp

  20. Welcome. My advice would be find another activity for your son. Scouting is in a death spiral.

  21. When the BSA is no more...units will no longer exist. Heck, units are disbanding right and left around the country as CO's are compelled to disassociate themselves from the BSA. Why invest energy into an activity that has a very good chance of shutting down in the not too distant future? Fond memories of scouting will not save the BSA (and units).
