  1. After logging into Scoutbook this morning; I had to share a screen shot for my personal kids: Even with a 3 year age gap between them, they have both earn the title of Eagle within 7 months of each other. The younger one even finished it during COVID 19.

  2. My general understanding of how logging works is that unless you are talking about a forest full of valuable lumber, "managed logging" just isn't really commercially viable. The expense and time involved in being careful and deliberate will basically wipe out the profit. Particularly if most of the wood is expected to be sold to the pulp mills.

  3. Of course they should. Scouts should never feel trapped in a unit. However, I think it is a valuable lesson for scouts to learn how to get along with other kids and resolve problems. I would not encourage scouts to unit shop as a way to avoid having to learn those useful skills.

  4. Folks are still learning about COVID-19 because A) it is such a new virus and B) there are legitimate concerns that information about the virus was initially withheld by the CCP. Plus as more research is done, the information changes.

  5. Update 6/8/20, from NYT, USNews, and omniagentsolutions.com Per Judge Silverstein order, child sex abuse lawsuits against local councils will remained halted until Nov. 16, which is also the recently extended victim claim deadline date. Under the agreement approved Monday, local councils wanting continued protection from litigation must sign agreements by July 6 requiring them to provide information to the Boy Scouts about their finances, including real estate holdings, for sharing with creditor committees. (bolded ~RS) The local councils, which run day-to-day operations for lo

  6. Heart of Virginia Council announced on Friday that Camp T. Brady Saunders will not hold normal camp programs this summer. Instead, they are making campsites available to troops to "rent" out for one to 14 days at a time during the summer. Program areas such as shooting, STEM, etc. will be staffed for an additional per-troop fee. The dining hall will not operate. Our troop is evaluating the options, but probably will not camp there this summer.

  7. My troop is doing their own camp. We got less than an month to prepare, so we are working on 2 options: 1. modern, MB oriented summer camp with limited choices of MB, or 2. hybrid activity based/ merit badge summer camp. Option 2 has them working on 2 MBs Environmental Science and Canoeing. Environmental Science was one of the most requested MB and Canoeing gets them wet since we have no swim area. We are giving them 2 options because there is a push by a few parents to make it MB focused. One in particular is trying to push it so that his son can get the remaining MBs. But what is frust

  8. It's a question of character. Many people believe that conservation and environmental stewardship is a fundamental moral obligation. As an ostensibly "outdoor" organization, an organization increasingly interested in promoting science, and an organization focused on the development of future generations, BSA is ideally positioned to be a leader in this area. If it chose to do so, BSA could show the public that it is a serious organization with a serious mission that directly affects the modern world. And that it is not just a dwindling, old-fashioned after-school activity in which ki

  9. A "plea deal being offered" can mean drastically different things depending on how public the case is. If I was going to speculate, I'd say that when this became publicized, the DA involved decided to throw the whole book at him and go for the max, which forces a defendant to decide if their remorse is strong enough to give up the rest of their life. I've seen plea deals in situations like this. As an example, I'd guess it went something like: Drunk driver kills someone and is charged with Vehicular homicide (6-10 year penalty); Case becomes publicized; DA adds charges

  10. Membership in Marc's council has continued to fall, as it doubled its territory. The outdoor program has been deemphasized. Megatreds. This loss of camping "customers" reduces the need for camp property. Plus, more campsites have been created at the largest site, Beaumont Scout Reservation. Marc is good at recalling one's name. He said he favored less training for volunteer adults as the solution to badly-run training, but left the same regime in charge of training. Districts were eliminated. Fund-raising has fallen significantly our the recent years, except as to the capital fund,

  11. A. Restrict membership to those who agree to abide by the Scout Oath and Scout Law, regardless of what part of society it discriminates against and I do not apologize for this statement. B. Get the focus off of teaching life lessons and let the lessons be learned through the Scouting program and not try to use Scouting to teach lessons. C. Restrict the BOY SCOUTS to boys. If girls don't like the Girl Scouts then change the Girl Scouts, and quit trying to drive a square peg into a round peg. I know what went on at the World Jamboree, condoms and the morning after pill given to any

  12. Sorry, but building character and leadership is not, and has never been the sole purpose of Scouting. It is just another bu#% s%&t idea that somebody came up with and a lot of people bought it. Scouting is and was and always has been a way for boys, yes boys, to get together and have fun. There is a system of goal setting, accomplishment, and recognition, but it's all about having fun. Lessons will be learned, character will be developed, but that is not the focus. If Scouting is presented as it is ment to be presented without the consistent intrusion of adults who assume they know all
