  1. Looking on the bright side of things, I am trying to encourage my scouts to take initiative on merit badge work, and find things they are interested in doing rather independently while at home. Maybe we can get away from a "merit badge class" mindset - which is unfortunately the mindset of the boys' troop to which we are linked. Even if a scout cannot complete all the steps of a particular merit badge class, there are a lot of steps of a lot of badges that can be done quite well at home, and there is a lot of "discuss" interaction with a merit badge counselor that can be done by telepho

  5. My prediction: "doubtful." Especially DC. They should move the event to Philmont. Sleep in tents. Eat the same dining hall food served to trekkers. Spend one of those days in the back country, stacking logs and making slash piles.

  8. Even if everything went best case scenario and this summer we were free from Coronavirus, those athletes can't train. Also this is a HUGE event. It should have been obvious that this needed to be postponed. I also appreciate the admittedly immature giggle I get at the name of the person who announced this from the IOC. But I'll be a good scouter and not mention that name here.

  11. Laughing out loud ... Son #2 just got hired to build and test a mobile wastewater treatment prototype! The plant could literally visit them. (If the client would let the scouts on the property.) That is, once the shipping container it was built to fit in starts its journey across the Pacific. I remember a town hike as a scout to the wastewater treatment plant. It's a pretty good show. Obviously some requirements will have to be delayed for any MB. I could try to make distance-counseling work. But, I'd really be concerned about some bean-counter busting on scouts' chops if my pap

  12. Everyone in the world is going to wish that they did everything they did three weeks earlier than they did it. NY is somewhere around 1 week away from running out of hospital beds. If you don't live somewhere that is in lock down, put yourself in lockdown now, and maybe you'll escape the nightmare worst. In Ohio, we're on lockdown, we're going to hold our first troop meeting via Zoom this Wednesday. Our goal is to have everyone in uniform, at home. This week will be about troop elections plus ideas for future meetings. Our goal is to meet every week at the same time as our regular m
