  1. I certenly wish no Ill will on our former BSA CEO, and pray for his complete recovery. I also question the necessity of having such a huge machine devouring tangible resources. A lot of very unpopular decisions were made that has had a negative impact on those individuals who mattered the most, the boys they were supposed to support. As a result many dedicated members, both youth and adult, have elected to leave. As a result the machine has less to do and should be reduced in order to survive the loss of the product demand. Even Baden Powell made the statement that the scouts should never

  2. We have a new CSE. Not only that but he's been a volunteer for a long time and has worked outside of the BSA. This is different in a very hopeful way. Maybe we have an opportunity to be a part of the discussion, to have our ideas heard. I'm not sure what the odds are but I'll take it. We'd have a much better chance of making things better if we were part of the discussion. Unfortunately, our collective view of national is, mildly saying, not so good and consequently we probably aren't looked upon very favorably and thus, are not part of the discussion. So, what would it take to change tha

  3. I expect his first job will be keeping BSA alive through bankruptcy. This will include saving our high adventure bases and major cost cutting. He should read Bullsh*t Jobs by David Graeber and Six Simple Rule by Yves Morieux. Both talk to how corporations (and private enterprise) create inefficient and ineffective solutions to solving problems. Centralize what makes sense for consistency or cost needs (IT, uniform, program requirements, marketing (some)). Distribute the rest back to councils, districts, units. Lay off most if not all assistant chief scout executives ... I see

  4. Mr. Mosby's biggest challenge will be to convince America that despite BSA's history of sexual abuse, clumsy response to changing social norms, and old-fashioned program, our country needs Scouts.

  5. I agree that you should not "flex" on the troop committee. This is not a fight worth fighting ... if the troop is running well and your son will be able to advance. I'm writing as it's worth knowing the intent. This is where I have the issue. Who contacts the CC for review? Your scout. When does he contact the CC? As soon as your scout thinks he's ready to contact the CC. In fact, your scout should talk with the CC early and let the CC know the proposal is coming. ... To grease the wheels for smoother approval. I really don't like the "slow to respond". In that ca

  7. Recently I've read a couple books by Bernard Mason. Wow that guy was amazing. He wrote books on woodcraft and roping, boomerangs, camping, drums. Some appear to be targeted at adults and others at adolescents. Much of it seems ready-made for Scouts and our programs. There is a book of his, The Book for Junior Woodsmen, that I would like to read but my library doesn't have it. I just finished Lariats & Lassos, good stuff. I searched this site, didn't find much on Mr Mason. You folks familiar with his work?

  8. If you're a scouter going to Philmont and use trekking poles, there's a fantastic deal on a highly rated, lightweight 1 person backpacking tent on Drop right now. https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent Yes, adults can use 1 person tents if that's what you chose at Philmont. This one is less than 2 pounds, which is a significant weight savings (and space saver) over splitting a Philtent, which is closer to 6 pounds.

  10. Convince volunteers they are appreciated and their (real) feedback is valued, would be a close second. At age 72?, maybe title of "Old Scout" . I have dibs on Old Fogey Scout, though Fart is often substituted for Fogey. My $0.02,

  11. Are you asking scouter.com to change? National earned our collective view. Still, I find most of scouter.com very friendly and inviting to everyone when the contributors show respect and a willingness to lesson while participating in the discussions. We don’t have to agree to be warm and inviting, just honest and noncondescending. The discussions tend to become less friendly when respect fades from the tone. Barry

  12. I have that same tent and it is great. Its a 1 person so understand that there is not a whole lot of room inside the screened in portion but lots of vestibule space and doors on both sides. The doors are on the sides so easier to get in and out. Going to Philmont in 2020 and cant wait to try it out in NM.

  13. 1. I think Mr. Turley, the current National Chair, meant Chief Scout Executive (CSE) not CEO. There is no CEO position in BSA. 2. There is also no President position, which would have been Mr. Turley's title had the position not been renamed to National Chair. The last President of the BSA was Randall Stephenson. Michael Surbaugh was never President of BSA, he was the unlucky 13th CSE of the BSA. https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2018/05/31/meet-your-bsa-national-key-3/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_presidents_of_the_Boy_Scouts_of_America I hope CSE Mo

  14. She said she had "differences" with the Board members. I wasn't in the room and neither was the LA Times or CBC. Is it your "understanding" or your acceptance of the media understanding? Plaintiffs' lawyer Rob Talach of London, Ont., who has represented victims of childhood abuse, said "The KPMG report was 'simply a documentary review' and it would be "bold" to draw conclusions about whether there was a coverup." Imagine, a plaintiffs' lawyer with more class than the media, Shocking! Sorry, but my attitudes are based, in part, on having to defend newspaper and TV "journalists

  17. So, who is Roger Mosby? Dear BSA Volunteers and Scouting Ambassadors,I am happy to let you know that earlier this evening, the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America named Roger C. Mosby as the organization’s CEO and President after a focused search, which was initiated when former CEO and President Michael B. Surbaugh retired after a tenure of more than four years. As the BSA moves through an extraordinary time of both change and opportunity, we believe Roger’s experience as a seasoned executive, adept at guiding transformation and driving growth, will bring the righ

  18. And therein lies the issue. Many people see Scouting in many different ways. Scouting, as @ParkMan noted is a "a youth development activity, Scouting is designed to put youth into new and challenging situations in a safe environment. Because these situations are challenging, Scouts often try them, struggle, fail, and then try them again. Along the way, youth often have to assume more responsibility then they are accustomed to" We cannot and should not try to be so many things to so many different constituencies. Concentrate on what we as an organization do well, focus on that. H
