  1. I concur with @Eagle94-A1, I've got bad feeling too. I'm glad to see the gains, but they are modest at best. They mostly represent motivated girls, the ones who have been waiting to join the BSA and did so as soon as they could. While there are still more girls that will join and excel, I doubt the additions will offset the other much larger losses the BSA is facing. Factor in other issues: 1. Adult volunteer fatigue/burnout/resignations 2. National's woeful financial status; its commitment to bureaucracy and poor communication; its ham-fisted management style with volu

  3. Not related to committees or gavels, but honoring former Troop leaders who passed away during their time in the Troop. This is how my Troop honors them.

  5. My committee meetings are held in bars, so no scout uniforms, oath or law. Our opening ceremony is starting a tab. That said, if committee meetings are held at other locations reciting the pledge is a good opening.

  6. I could live with it being an annual requirement. But it undermines recruiting when you throw surprises at your volunteers without explanation.

  7. One of our former ASM's was a woodworker and made a gavel out of a piece of wood from our summer camp. Unfortunately he passed away way too early from brain cancer, so we use the gavel symbolically to feel he is still with us. Dale

  8. IMO, this would make a great commercial for the time of year and time of need. Might help boost morale and get some people thinking. Scouts singing with Salvation Army Scouts sending cards and packages to those serving and protecting us while away from their families Scouts helping with Wreaths Across America Scouts collecting toys for Marine's Toy for Tots Scouts selling and recycling Christmas trees. Even Scouts working in Santa's workshop. https://www.newsherald.com/news/20191214/boy-scouts-help-build-bikes-for-salvage-santa It just would not be C

  10. I think Venturing is the canary in the coal mine because it really relies on youth leadership and there is much less incentive for adults to fix things. What I saw of venturing was really poor leadership and teamwork skills resulting in a loss of interest. The few crews I've seen were run like GSUSA troops in that it was a few adults that held it together until they aged out and the crew collapsed. I'm sure some were/are great, but not what I saw. I'm not at all surprised by those numbers. I think it's entirely because the youth have less opportunity to learn people skills outside of scou

  11. We used to serve margs after the meeting was over. So the meeting usually started with "We only have an hour, let's get going." Those were the best meetings. Succinct.

  13. From Annual Reports on BSA web site: Basis trend of above... My estimate, really hope, is that after further LDS subtraction of about 15-25% male membership in Cubs and Scouts BSA is nearing its' "plateau" of boy membership. I am aware of nothing that may increase boy membership significantly. This includes USA population growth because Census data projects nil increase of 10-14 year old males during 2016-2020-2025. https://www.census.gov/data/tables/2017/demo/popproj/2017-summary-tables.html (FYI... Census reports 31,751,000 male population between 5 & 19 years old for
