  1. You put your Raptor claw on an important issue. "What is important for us [as adults in Scouting] is: NOT the food on the campout, but that the boys cooked it. NOT a sharp-looking flag ceremony, but that the boys put it together. NOT who would make the best Patrol Leader [in our opinion], but that the boys elect one. NOT that Johnny learns first aid, but that Billy teaches him. NOT that we cover everything on the meeting agenda, but that the Senior Patrol Leader is in charge. Our goal is not to get things done, but to create a safe and healthy environment wi

  3. But his interview/statement doesn't seem to indicate that he fully acknowledges any of that. He makes excuses, suggests that he may not have even touched her backside, and then dances around an apology but never really gives one. It's easier to forgive when the person in question at least truly realizes what they did.

  4. Membership numbers are out and reflect continued growth for the Scouts BSA program. End of November 2019 is +1.2% for youth Scouts and up 7.1% for units, in comparison to end of November 2018. This certainly reflects the influx of female Scouts and LDS departures. The figures that will count will be year-end figures, as that is when the LDS relationship officially ends. After the LDS departures take effect, I'm thinking we will have a 10% Scouts BSA youth membership drop (comparing 2019 year-end with 2018 year-end). If we continue to grow female Scouts BSA units and all youth at the curre

  5. I have stayed on the sidelines for this one, as this is a topic that is going to stir more passion than many we see here. I has been debated on multiple scouting forums, and there is very little middle ground. People either think he should be burned at the stake, or that this one (hopefully) lapse in judgement should not have lasting consequences. I agree that every situation deserves an objective look, but this quote jumped out at me. In the case of scouts clowning around and smacking each other on the rear, yes, we discuss what is appropriate and hopefully it can be a teaching moment

  6. Well, maybe, but a Visionary is one who sees the big picture and understands where the little pieces fit to make the big picture reach the goal. I do understand the 10 great leaders theory and can’t disagree, but one good visionary can get most volunteers of mediocre abilities to be productive because they match their skills with specific program needs. I witnessed a visionary place a volunteer with basically no skills in a position that matched what little she had to offer. She earned the Silver Beaver for her noble effort in improving the district program. If just following the program a

  7. OK, let's reflect it onto something else in the news. Look at the Survivor show: 4 weeks or so ago, they have footage of a guy who is all touchy feely. He is approached and denies everything and then given another shot. After that, they gang up on the accuser for over reacting. This week at the end of the show, they mention how he was kicked off the show. We have many years of blaming the accuser, "She dressed that way", ""She shouldn't have been there", "It's just lockeroom talk". In this case there is video evidence of what happened. People may or may not agree

  8. Should it matter? Does the so-called "accused" get to tell the victim that it is less offensive because it was above her belt instead of below and he used something other than his hand to hit her? Maybe she just needs it mansplained to her.

  9. Those aren't brackets, they're parentheses. Those are brackets. My favorite is pigs in a blanket. We both have them but yours taste better and are made with proper pig, as opposed to various animal parts and grain.

  11. This wasn't a "lapse in judgement." This is Sexual Battery under Georgia law. Kick him out. Send him to a judge. @qwazse : I dont think this is an impertinent moment. It was a crime. I also don't think she was slow to react. She was attempting to continue to perform her job without making a scene. She understood that she wasn't in immediate danger and this doofus was on TV. If I were the IH of his church he would be fired immediately from both scouts and his job. Men who think it is appropriate to touch a woman's butt without permission don't have any business in the BSA

  12. To be fair though. The LDS loss is not indicative of anything about the program. That we're up 1% in membership is 1000 times more important to the longevity of the BSA than a 10% drop due to their departure. I say this not to demean the LDS church - not at all. They made a strategic decision to part ways and that is their right. That we nationwide are seeing growth exclusive of that loss is very, very promising. Thanks for sharing the news @Cburkhardt!

  13. If we kick every leader out for a momentary lapse in judgement there won't be any leaders.
