  1. The kid is playing his parents against you? Play the parents against the kid. "Do you really want your parents here the next time you get into trouble? Won't your friends tease you about that? Won't your parents be embarrassed that their son is a troublemaker who can't control his mouth? " To the parents: "I'm so happy that you'll be available within 30 minutes to attend any future counseling sessions at weekly meetings, monthly camp outs, and Summer camp. Most parents are not that committed to micromanaging their son."

  2. Interesting discussion for Environmental Science merit badge, etc. IMHO, planting less susceptible species in a stressed ecosystem will be preferred over replanting current threatened species. Montana Council, Boy Scouts of America, is underway with a woodland transformation project on Melita Island after devastating stress on trees due to root rot and dwarf mistletoe, in combination with defoliation by Tussock moth and mortality by bark beetle. The biggest issue is safety to the more than 1,000 youth and staff who make the island their home throughout the summer. Recent winds have

  4. Saw this and wonder where the breakdown was. The troubling detail (and it is only alleged) - The abuse allegedly took place “on multiple occasions” at Boy Scout retreats and meetings between January 2018 and November 2018 This implies this is not a one incident issue, it happened at meetings (assume that was the weekly Troop meetings), it happened at retreats (assume that is outings), and it took place over a 10 to 11 month period. Not sure what may be occurring with that troop and how is the 1 on 1 apparent access not being noted. Meetings could be the guy g

  5. Our Troop camped this past weekend just north of the IL/WI border, with some snow/ice on the ground and low temperatures in the evening around 24 degrees. We had a great troop meeting in advance with the scouts leading a discussion on cold weather gear and camping tips. All had a good time and most were well prepared. You can discuss cold weather gear at a troop meeting multiples times, but for a few scouts it takes a trip in the 20s with snow and ice on the ground for the suggestion that they wear boots and not gym shoes to actually sink in. We will have a post-trip discussion/rose

  6. Yeah, tell the parents that they need to be present when their son scandalizes scouts with his foul mouth.

  8. I've often heard that the key requirement to bring a leader is the desire to lead. The key requirement to bring a servant is a desire to serve. So, I think the key requirement to being a Scout or Scouter is a desire to be one. That seems an appropriate requirement to me. If you desire to join the movement and adhere to the principles in it, we welcome you. (That of course excludes the folks who are excluded because of prior bad acts) That seems about right to me.

  9. "Packing out personal waste is not a new concept. Climbers on Mt. Rainier started using "blue bags" in the early 1980s, and mandatory carry-everything-out programs later spread to popular peaks like Shasta and Denali, as well as to environmentally sensitive Utah canyons like Buckskin Gulch and the Virgin River Narrows. But the addition of Mt. Whitney to that list signals a new willingness by land managers to use this tactic on trails where backcountry toilets are impractical to build, and the routes are too trafficked or rocky to absorb the impact of numerous cat holes...." https://www.ba

  10. Yep. We are camping next weekend, and I am sure I will hear a few comments about how cold they are, as it is supposed to drop down to 68 Friday night!

  11. That's the first thing I thought of. He's allowed to take JUST his own son, but not JUST the other kid. If he takes his own son AND the other kid, it's acceptable.

  12. That wouldn't violate 1 on 1 and presumably there were 2 registered leaders at the event.

  13. Surbaugh is right because we are actually doing (and hopefully, about to do) what is actually the best that we can do. If the BSA does not file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reasonably soon, it will be unwound financially and operationally over a relatively short time. The trial attorneys who have filed hundreds of cases since the lifting of the statutes of limitations (maybe even thousands of cases by now) will pick the bones completely clean and the BSA will exist no more. All that will be left will be a few restricted trust-held properties, but even those will be abandoned because ther

  14. I am more of an optimist and I take longer view. Surbaugh is doing exactly what is needed and the BSA is succeeding. We will be much better-off. Over the past 25 years the BSA has faced increasing market competition in the form of the explosion of athletic and other options for youth and high-paying parents to choose. Simultaneous with that time, the BSA was made into a cultural punching bag when an internal group forced adoption of "don't ask don't tell" (DADT). For the first time in our history the religious dogma of certain entities was being mandated on many units which, until t
