  1. Have you ever read mythology? Zeus would never be compliant with YP. He is constantly taking strange forms and sexually molesting young people as they sleep. Zeus is the perfect example of what BSA is trying to keep out of scouting.

  2. I have a "Duty to God" conversation with several Scouts every year. I would simply ask them, "What does Zeus expect of you?" "Do those expectations align with the Scout Law?" "How are you meeting those expectations?"

  3. Karunamom3, Big move. Needed to be done. While the adults are setting up adult positions; 1) Form the patrol, have them elect their patrol leader, and then have the new patrol leader select his assistant. 2) Assuming that the adults are getting the adult stuff done, set up the camping trips for the balance of the year. At least set dates for camping trips (avoiding holidays and school dates). 3) Camping equipment: assuming they each have their personal equipment, ask the parents for any extra leftover pots and pans for the patrol to start a patrol cook kit. You can upg

  4. Update: Today was the last day of the season. Tear down was done in the perfect weather, it felt like it was fall. It was hot during the season, but it finally cooled off at the end.

  5. IMHO, if a accusation can remove a scouter from the BSA , a felony conviction should rescind an Eagle award. A partial response to aberration. My $0.02,

  6. Last week was extremely brutal for staff. It was very hot and it was easily to get dehydrated. I believe the heat index was over 110 at one point. Staff still sleeps in the green canvas tents, but at least we have a electricity. I was glad I decided to bring a fan this year. We had some nasty storms throughout the week which also made a impact on us. Outpost was harder than usual due to storms, but we still made do. This week is beautiful and perfect temperature, so I guess it’s a plus for this week. Only places in camp with AC is trading post, camp office, and health lodge. It doesn’t even r

  7. Just flew back from Philmont and boy are my glutes tired. This was our first trip and I’ll try to cover my personal gear, crew gear and my son’s gear. My Tent – Tarptent Aeon – Well, early on at Ponil, I forgot to pull out 1 stake, pulled on the tent and made a major rip where the mesh attaches to the Dyneema. Argh! Tenacious tape kept it usable, but it’s toast. I brought it because people said sites were tight. We had 3 advisers and I got to tent alone. Not true. I could fit my Duplex in every spot I put my Aeon. I planned to sell either the Aeon or Duplex, but now that decision

  8. Hello everyone. I have been reading all your posts for a couple months, but have recently been crowned Cubmaster. We've started our recruiting efforts and our recruiting night / pack meeting is at the end of September. I'd like to hear your thoughts on how you arrange your Cub Scouts for the first several minutes of the Pack meeting (opening, welcome/introductions). I like a giant semi-circle around the front of the room with each of our six dens sitting together in small groups (along the semi-circle line) on the floor with parents in chairs right behind. The semi-circle gives a large amount

  9. Not downplaying the severity of the charges or impact on the BSA and Eagle Scouts; wonder if he earned Entrepreneurship, American Business, or Truck Transportation Merit Badges? Also assume he got to see the essential elements of Fingerprinting Merit Badge up close and personal.

  10. @Scouter_Chris welcome to the forum! Though not active here on scouter dot com in over two years, maybe if we tag @SeattlePioneer we'll see a return visit.

  11. What it comes down to is that the BSA and it's volunteers have sold Scouting as a positive environment for kids. We've sold it as character development, an all American activity. So when folks involved with Scouting do terrible things, the media pounces, because it's scandalous. If it bleeds, it leads, and the same is true of scandalous things. Most folks with an opinion worth a cup of spit aren't going to look at this young man pushing drugs and think, "Scouting caused him to do that." I don't feel a need to defend Scouting from a situation like this.

  13. Thanks. In today's crazy world, it can be hard to discern reality from sarcasm. I wouldn't be at all surprised if, in a few short years, BSA has its own brand of cannabis products, grown at scout camps and sold door to door by scouts. Christmas tree sales, however, will be banned since they promote a religious holiday and might be deemed offensive by some scouts.

  16. Daughter always had a deck of waterproof cards in her pack. I have a range of mocha pots (and demitasse cups), and choose the one most suited for the number of espresso drinkers and type of trip. Our crew was known for its night time winter hikes. My patrol growing up became all about the chocolate fondue. These are things that kids stumble upon the more they camp together. It will be neat to hear what yours come up with!

  17. I blame the boys . "We'd like to come to your camp but the PLC chose to go to Camp X instead because they like it better."
