  1. I was a Cub Scout earning AOL and a Boy Scout briefly in the early to mid 80s. We didnt have siblings tagging along nor did we have sisters doing the same stuff we were but not getting credit. So the girls have always been there reasoning has not been a convincing factor for me. I was against girls in Cub Scouts and Boy... Uhhh Scouts BSA. What's the logically next step for someone with my views on the subject?? Yep, I had a lenghtly discussion with my CM about laying groundwork for a female Troop in our area. My daughter is a 5th grader this year and a member in another nationa

  2. You mean a Brotherhood of Scouting honor campers? Who exemplify the Oath and Law in their daily lives? What a novel idea! (Sarcasm mode off) I think there are three main ways to change the Order back to a highly esteemed organization . One change the election criteria. The main focus from the order to the troop should be " We want your best both in skills and character. " not " We accept anyone with a first class badge and one summer camp under his belt." Two. Make the Ordeal a real challenge. Have elongomats who know what the tests represent and can explain th

  3. Timing oneself is a good idea. But, if many of the new scouts are 16 year old venturers, camp staff, or girl scouts, I would suggest that "kid factor" will be less than 1. They are very efficient at making sure everyone is on the same page. Keep in mind that "Group Identity" is a method of venturing. Most folks relate that to uniforming. But in application it comes down to making sure everyone knows the ideals and by-laws of the group. As time goes on, and older scouts get busy doing other things, and younger scouts have more interest adventure and fellowship than advancement, then you ge

  4. internal communication within BSA is often, like external communication, awful. Plus, inconsistencies abound.

  5. I view this question the same way I view merit badge classes at summer camp. We don’t need a female registered leader 21+ sitting in every session with a female Scout, so we don’t need one riding along in every car. As long as there is no 1-on-1 contact, you’re fine. My personal policy when driving my daughter and her friends is that either my daughter rides in the front passenger seat or no one rides in the front passenger seat. But that’s just me.

  7. So, has anyone read the 2019 Guide to Ceremonies, or asked their Council Staff Adviser?

  8. Some people aren't very good at communicating. Some aren't very good at putting themselves in others shoes and seeing how someone else might view things, or be so wrapped up in the excitement of what they see as a good thing that they never see someone else might have qualms and reservations. Into this vacuum, people will talk, assume, jump to conclusions, fret, worry. Maybe it's all in hand, maybe none of it is, maybe the powers that be don't understand there's a groundswell of concern, worry, which could easily, if not already, morph into frustration, anger, resentment, etc. T

  9. When my son crossed over, he went on 4 weekend campouts with the troop without me. I had signed up as ASM right away, but only came to meetings. I went to summer camp his first summer, but that was for me, not him. In fact, there was very little times we were together. I took a training class the first two days. Summer camp is the closest thing I have to a personal vacation, and I very much enjoy it.

  10. MikeS, I'm glad your chapter teams still exist. Ours were disbanded last year. They (I mean the council/lodge) may do one more year of call-outs in regalia at this season's summer camp using the currently approved national OA script, and then that's done. Since last year, there are no call-outs, just announcements to the troop right after the election. There is a nationally approved so called call-out ceremony that can be done in scout uniform, but no one has of yet to do it. To read this new script is painful and extremely sad. We knew about the demise of the Cross Over/ AOL Ceremon

  11. To my knowledge Chapter ceremony teams have not been disbanded - the Call-Out Ceremony is typically written by the Chapter, though a generic Call Out scrip is available through National. It' the Cross-Over / AoL Ceremonies that have been poo-pooed by National and replaced by an "official script"/"Ceremony". Maybe that's what you're thinking of??

  13. We've just received requests from two troops for a Call-Out Ceremony. Didn't they get the memo that all chapter ceremony teams have been disbanded? You now have your election, everybody gets voted in, the announcement is made right after the election. Everyone's a winner. The NEW OA! sst3rd former chapter ceremony advisor

  14. My apologies to all that I was not crystal clear in the fact that we were all talking about a scout being "Suspended" and having his "Membership" revoked which is exactly what happened to this scout so let's not split hairs. Yes according our Council Executive, you MUST report ANY Discipinary Decision that concludes in a Scout being suspended. So YES, I was right in the fact that it should have been reported to the Camp, District and Council. As a Unit Commissioner, if I found out this happened without it being reported, there would be a problem. So @David CO, I hope you don't get caught i
