  1. I am stepping down at the end of the year after a long tenure as Scoutmaster. I have been SM longer than all my scouts have been alive, and some of their parents too! I plan to stay active with the troop in any way that I can, but it will be a difficult transition for me. I don't want to impede the new regime, but still want to help out. Any advice from anyone who has been thru this situation or had their troop go thru it? Thanks for your help!

  2. Our family came terrifyingly close to tragedy last night. We were on our way home from a birthday dinner for my nephew when my cell rang and it was my oldest son, who had been in a car accident. He was still trapped in the wreckage. He had stopped on the Interstate for another wreck, and a youngster plowed into the back of his car doing at least 65 mph. I immediately turned around and headed his way and got trapped in the traffic gridlock, as we watched police cars, ambulances and wreckers try to get to the scene. Then got another call saying he was in the ambulance headed to the ER. As

  3. The boys totaled three cars last year. Some friends asked me how mad I was, and I told them there's nothing sweeter than the sound of your child's voice instead of someone else giving you the news. I've walked through the valley with friends who had to endure the alternative. Make good use of your Christmas miracle. And if your son is ever discouraged about the hassled with insurance, car dealerships, etc .,,. remind him that those are small trade-offs for happiness.

  4. While I've never stepped down as a SM, I did step down as Cub Scout Day Camp Program Director (and de facto camp director). Couple of ideas iunclude: 1) Develop a hobby 2) Do some fun things with the family

  5. I was asked to take three months off to give new SM some room. It was hard, but I believe it was as much a benefit for me as it was him. Barry

  6. I love talking with our soon to be Eagles at their troop boards. I try very hard to spend at least 75% of my time listening. I view these reviews not so much as a practice run for the scout but as feedback as how we did as scouters. My stock questions are " If a new scout were to ask you what does it mean to be an Eagle Scout how would you answer?" and " If you were SM of this troop, what would you change?" I have only ever heard of one scout boy ever being failed at a troop level board. He was a transfer from another troop, and had altered some of his older brothers blue cards

  7. All Star Comic Con to the rescue All Star Comic Con will dedicate the their upcoming Holiday Party Dec 12, to Star Wars Days, the Star Wars-themed weekend organized annually by Boy Scout Troop 501 that was forced to cancel two days prior to its opening due to scheduling conflicts with its host facility. 9. Agreed. We're all adults (not to mention volunteers & teammates) and should behave as such. It's one thing to approach adult personal behavior In General as an educational opportunity - of course we should all be students of the scout oath and law (though, alas, I personally require repeated instruction). It''s another for any of us to appear to call-out the behavior of other adults under the veil of championing those values. No one appointed any of us Lone Ranger.

  10. Are you sure? I think first person singular would be IBELOS. If you are addressing one of same you call them YOUBELOS. Where I am writing this you might hear the occasional Y'ALLBELOS in lieu of WEBELOS - regionally accepted. Glad I could help. Clivus

  11. Here it is! I couldn't wait to throw on the full uniform, so here is the hat at least. It's a perfect fit too; I am so excited to wear this to the next pack meeting!

  12. Wow ... what I day I just had. Today, as it happens, is my birthday. I woke up in the morning, and found banners and balloons all over my front yard, which was a total surprise. Then this afternoon, I found out who put them there, for I answered the doorbell to find three of my little Webelos friends at my door singing Happy Birthday in big loud voices! I welcomed them in with their mother and gave them some cake ... and then they pulled out the card. And inside that card was a gift card, a gift card to the Scout Store to the amount of $100, which I was expressly commanded to spend

  14. My son wanted some publicity photos for his Webelos Mountain event. He is running the event with his OA chapter. The idea is for Webelos and Patrols from the district to camp together and do scout skills. This isn't the best of photos of the bunch, but one that I was small enough to attach! J
