  1. Perhaps the Green Bar Leadership Experience in the spring with PLs and SMs. Then, a Green Bar Bill Camporee in the fall? This'll give me a lot to do and think about over these short winter days! I love it!

  2. I started with this recipe. It makes 2. http://50campfires.com/dutch-oven-cheesecake-recipe/ To make it chocolate, I took a small bag of dark chocolate chips and belted it with 1/2 cup of water and mixed that into the mix. I folded in a small jar of marshmallow fluff. I should have used half of what I used because it end up exploding a bit out of the cheesecake. I intended to put marshmallows on top of both, but forgot on the first one. I had a large and a small dutch oven available and the larger one took a good bit longer to cook than the smaller one. I topped it with

  3. Hi everyone! I'm Dan, a patrol leader of the Penguins at Baldivis scout group in Baldivis, WA Australia. I am new to this forum, although I have been to other forums before and I am active in a few. I am very good at STEM and I know how technology works (for example, a PC). I am 13 years old and have never been any type of moderator/helper and I would like to be one. I hope everyone here is doing well in badge work! I've nearly got my explorer level (2nd stage) and I'm going for my Australian Scout Medallion. My profile pic is my dog from a few years ago btw... Dan

  4. I have been toying with the idea of proposing a learning opportunity for new and seasoned Patrol Leaders, called the Green Bar Leadership Experience, to be held in camp using the outdoors as a classroom and introducing skills-oriented team-building activities. My vision for this is that it would be a pre-NYLT experience and would incorporate a separate--yet simultaneous--experience for Scoutmasters. This Green Bar Leadership Experience would take place in the spring and last for a day and a half in camp, building on ILST, and paving the way for participation in NYLT. Attendees would

  5. the boys just camped this past weekend in the white stuff. in tents fri night, then lashed a ridgepole between two trees and leaned some others against. A tarp for cover and they had a lean-to. Two of them opted to sleep in it Sat night. Temps both nights were just under freezing. They cooked and ate over an open fire.

  6. Welcome, @Jahaza , to the Forum! Let's build a fire, warm up over a cup of hot chocolate, and talk about Scouting! (You don't have to sleep in the quinzee. )

  7. The reason treks expose leadership so profoundly is because the crew is experiencing a relationship in one week that takes almost six months to develop in normal patrol activities. Adults really struggle with the shift of behavior. Scouts will figure things out, but it's more emotional than adults like. Barry

  8. I am a Lodge Adviser. In the past, there were four official OA ceremonies that must be conducted as written. These were the Pre-Ordeal, Ordeal, Brotherhood and Vigil. Crossovers, AOL and callout ceremonies were homegrown affairs. There is now an officially recognized crossover/AOL ceremony. It and only it is to be used for crossover/AOL ceremonies. It is done without regalia and has a backpacking journey theme to it to recognize the Cubs journey to Boy Scouting. It is done in uniform with backpacks, compasses, etc. as props. All Lodges are required to use this ceremony or don't do them

  10. Just for clarification. It was council members plus volunteers who conducted the EBoR. The gentleman who brought the paper to be signed was one of the members on my son's board, and there was an apology made for causing him anxiety and stress.

  11. Some interesting bits from Baden-Powell's Aids to Scoutmastership, the section on "Proficiency Badge (Merit Badges)". Of course this is badges not advancement. And Baden-Powell founded scouting in the U.K., not the B.S.A. which itself had some significant innovations.

  12. What if the whole troop went? How about a special Green Bar Bill Micro Camp-O-ree? What if you had a weekend at a scout camp were several whole troops went to the camp, taking their own gear. Send each troop an informational packet on the Green Bar Bill method of scouting and what the weekend is all about and make sure they are on board with the idea. What if you had a Green Bar Bill expert embedded with each troop couching the scout master and SPL. What if you had an afternoon of scout games for the patrols to have fun as patrols. Have an amazing campfire planed by

  13. Indeed. I have recollections of a UK reprint of a badge book from the 1920s-1930s that had a Mining proficiency badge in it. One of the requirements was to have spent "at least six months" working down a pit. Those were the days eh?

  14. Um, it was a church. This troop is sponsored by a United Methodist Church, so I think they are free to expect moral behavior from the youth in their program. They didn't condemn him to Hell...they just imposed their interpretation of "morally straight" expected of an Eagle Scout. Suffice it to say, that as the District Rep, I did not vote or offer an opinion. When it became clear that the Board would not approve, I called the District Advancement Chair for guidance.

  17. I made a couple of mistakes, but they still turned out pretty good. First, I should cut the wings into pieces. Second, I should have finished them in a dutch oven, but we didn't have any available. I brined them in salt water with chili pepper overnight. Our mandatory ingredient was honey. I brushed them with honey on the grill. The problem on the grill was they were going to get too dark on the outside and not cook on the inside. This is where I wanted to finish them in the dutch oven. Instead, I boiled them. Then I put them back on the grill. For the sauce, I melted butte

  18. I can unfortunately confirm that the rumor is true. I received the new ceremony procedure today and it clearly states that "at no time should any member wear Native American costumes".

  19. Thank you all for your input and advice. I have been following the thread, but unable to comment until this morning. Last night my son received a call from the district leader, who it turns out was the gentleman who told us to appeal. He told my son that even though in the original meeting they did not have a unanimous decision, there was another meeting where they went over his qualifications and reviewed his project again. This time he was approved. He is now an Eagle in waiting. He was told that the papers will be sent to National as soon as they get a signature from him due to it

  20. If I could up-vote @perdidochas's comment twice, I would. As a scout, I loved helping with other scouts' projects be cause they were role models on how to get into the nitty-gritty and get stuff done. It was also clear to me that projects weren't hard, and neither were MBs, really. My PL earned his Eagle at age 14. But, I also wasn't about to spend every weekend chipping away at some MB, so I was not going to follow in his footsteps. The difference between me earning Eagle at 14 and earning it at 17.5: cartoons and NASCAR. It's just that simple.

  21. I guess I have a different view of leadership than the man who voted no for this Scout. IMHO, if a leader isn't getting dirty working on a small scale project (like Eagle projects are), he's not using his resources (including himself) wisely.

  22. Thank you all for the quick responses and helpful info. I'm still slowly digging through all the material, but I think the best course of action would be to press on forward as a Lone Scout. I am located in Asia, and have contacted the local district about getting started. I will certainly be using this forum heavily as a resource in the future!
