  1. We humans tend to turn off our when we scolded. Pushback to Patrol Method is generally the result of not understanding the inherent value of giving responsibility to to the Patrol Leader. Spend the time on the inherent value (positive), then you won’t have to spend much time on the pushback (negative). Barry

  2. Earlier this week there was a picture posted on the town middle school FB page showing a class of 8th grade boys and girls cooking outside. I emailed the teacher and this is what I found out. I KNOW there is the interest with the kids now for sure I just want to get to them to talk about Scouts. I asked if he thought there might be interest with those girls in starting a Troop since we have nothing anywhere close. They are for sure not doing Girl Scout stuff. Anyway they teach is a coach and asked that I let him finish football for this year and he wants to meet to talk abou

  3. I have to laugh...When visiting the Council Service Center the other day, I was approached by the manager of our Scout Shop. "LeCastor, look!" She handed me the new "classic" red-topped socks and said, "I thought of you immediately!" They know me so well...

  4. Thank you all for your input and advice. I have been following the thread, but unable to comment until this morning. Last night my son received a call from the district leader, who it turns out was the gentleman who told us to appeal. He told my son that even though in the original meeting they did not have a unanimous decision, there was another meeting where they went over his qualifications and reviewed his project again. This time he was approved. He is now an Eagle in waiting. He was told that the papers will be sent to National as soon as they get a signature from him due to it

  5. Very true. I know that the Coleman tent will only last if I am careful with it, it is not really made for heavy duty use. The Big Agnes may have cost 10x more than the Coleman, but I know it will, taken care of, last many, many years. Doesn't hurt that Big Agnes has excellent customer service and backs their products to the fullest. I do see that with some of the cheaper tents that parents buy for Scouts, particularly in tearing them when being a bit enthusiastic about pulling on the tent corner rather than the stakes during take down.

  6. Around this time of year is a great time to talk to parents about may come under a Christmas tree. I always seemed to get a knife every year for many reasons. I'm sure there are a lot of scouts and scouters that can lend a can opener type for this requirement. I am not one for loaning knives as someone always wants to pry and break a tip off. Before parents go out and spend a lot on their scout's first knife, I would caution that most scouts do three things with their first knife: 1. have to sharpen it regardless whether it is sharp or not; 2. cut themselves. nuff said; 3. lose the knife

  7. I'm really disappointed in this thread. I clicked hoping for a discussion and recipes for some sugary, gooey, pastry goodness, and you guys are talking about can openers.
