  1. Time to start a tradition. The girls troop will have the same numbers - only in reverse. Or jumbled in the case of a palindrome. Or completely different for any troop that has multiples of the same number. Or or ....

  4. As a veteran, I'd rather not tell people. I don't want/need the recognition. Its always awkward when the cashier at Lowe's thanks me for my service (they know since it gets me 10% OFF). Scouting is for these scouts who are working hard to earn Eagle. I was never a scout, but as a scoutmaster, and a veteran, I will do anything to keep them safe, and that's about as far as I take it these days.

  5. I think the key word here is "uniform". So long as everyone is wearing the selected hat and it is in good taste with the outdoor scouting program, you won't have too much problem. Our patrols picked their hats, but I have seen PLCs (or adults) pick out the hat for the troop as well. I saw one large troop that wore campaign hats and they look very sharp. The resource for campaign hats are surplus stores that have access to drill sergeant hats. But be warned, scouts will tend to only wear comfortable hats that are comfortable in the woods. Campaign, and even baseball caps, don't do as well

  6. From :the uniform inspection sheet. Unlike other elements, this does not say "official headgear." Which gives your troop the room it needs to choose what serves you all best. It seems that you are counting on a lot of sun (and girls who will cut their hair short).

  8. @MikeS72, Unit Scouter Reserve is a designation for 18+ year-old Scouters who wish to be registered with a unit but without a specific position, as you state. The registration fee is as @Treflienne says: $33 + any liability insurance your council may charge. This allows a parent or other adult to be a member of the unit and, as a result of registering, requires that person to have the BSA background check. Unit Scouter Reserve members must take YPT. The upside for the Reserve member and for unit JTE is that there is no position-specific training required.

  9. I was an (ordinary) Scout, and thought the new Sea Scout Ship (759, Ashton MD) was a very cool idea. But I stayed a Land Scout thru my career. SS759 started out with a raft created from 55 gallon drums fastened together for a trip down the tidal Potomac and around and up the bay to Annapolis MD. Thank you , Henry.

  11. Eagle1993, I want to read the complaint, which I have printed out, before commenting. My daughter and grandson who live in Washington State are here for a week-long visit so I am kind of giving that my priority at the moment, other than work of course.

  12. I think the mid-20's is a fine age for starting a career in politics, and obviously the voters supported him, so I hope he serves the people of Iowa well and I hope that he lives the BSA oath and law throughout his service to the people of his state. BSA teaches about citizenship and we should be proud. Generically proud, we don't have to be specifically proud of political stances, etc. but proud that a Boy Scout is serving people, yes!

  13. What's wrong with a boy thinking of himself as a boy, or a girl thinking of herself as a girl? They don't become genderless when the Scout meeting begins.
