  1. I did find this. It was our one page "flyer" version for recruitment. It has a similar one page parent info sheet of about the same length. Forgive the formatting. The original version has multiple columns, quotes and nice formatting and pictures. <big image> Boy Scout Troop ### <city>, <state> http://<web site> WHAT IS SCOUTING: Boy Scouts is a boy led program of fun outdoor activities, peer group leadership opportunities, and a personal exploration of career, hobby and special interests, all designed to achieve BSA's objectives of d

  2. I suspect all the training folks I've worked with over the years would absolutely agree with this statement. What they and I don't agree with is National mandating training and the Council's turning that mandate into a revenue stream.

  3. I can't get the multiple quote thing to work to include your entire post, but I think this falls under GTA section 4.2.1.2 The Scout Is Tested: "The unit leader authorizes those who may test and pass the Scout on rank requirements. They might include his patrol leader, senior patrol leader, an assistant unit leader, another Scout, or the unit leader himself. Merit badge counselors teach and test him on requirements for merit badges." So the Scoutmaster decides who may test and sign off the Scout on rank requirements. The Scoutmaster might decide that youth leaders or other adults ca

  5. Eagle94, I too am becoming very gram conscious. I've tried to lug around equipment from my younger years. But I'm finally admitting defeat on some items, like stoves. Just too heavy and it wears me out. The gear is still in good shape...but I'm not! Any thoughts on boiling/cooking times with alcohol stoves?

  6. Don't know about the Solo Stove or Evernew. I have a Trangia Alcohol Stove, which is very similar to the Solo and Evernew stoves. I've had no issues with it except 1: weight. But I am slowly turning into a "Gram Weenie" .Trangia's are solidly constructed, but they are heavier than other stoves out there. Once nice feature is the simmer ring and screw top lid. You can put out the fire with the simmer ring, let it cool down so it, then use the screw top lid to keep the fuel not used stored for next use. I don't believe the Solo has the screw top lid. As for the Evernew, it definitely doesn

  7. Scouting organizations are still registering to participate in the 2018 Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) over the October 19 – 21 weekend. With about 1 month to go, JOTA Coordinator Jim Wilson, K5ND, told ARRL that registration is “probably on target” at this point. US registrations stood at 235 as of the end of last week. Right after JOTA 2017, 489 US locations had signed up, although that included both Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) participants, which, Wilson said, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have “remained steadfast” in considering separate events, although, he noted

  8. Get the SM to sign off on the requirement in November. The committee cannot vote to force the SM to do things that aren't according to BSA National.

  9. Wow. I've been looking, but I can't find it. We used to hand it out on nights people visited the troop. We switched scoutmasters years ago and we've not used it since. And, I can't find it. I'll hunt it down.

  10. Good question. Let me explain by starting with a my life lesson based from our experience of expanding the troop program. Over the years of crossing new scouts into the program, we learned that two new scouts was the maximum number a patrol of 8 scouts could handle without negatively effecting the patrol culture. The goal is to assimilate the new scouts into the patrol culture, not change the culture as a result of the new scouts. So, we learned that 25% was the maximum number of new scouts we could add to the patrol without effecting it too much. In truth, I preferred 20% or less. I have

  11. You're catching on. Most rules are redundant to existing guidelines, they may help folks narrow their focus at a particular time, but they inculcate a lax attitude toward working with source documents.

  12. Indeed. Once upon a time that leader was me! I used to run cubs, then about 9 years ago I switched to scouts. It was a steep learning curve for me as I learned to cut the apron strings and let them get on with it. I understand how it can be difficult to sit back and watch the kids making a hash of something and not intervene. I've learned over time to let them take more and more of the responsibility and its worked better as time as gone past.

  13. The common misconception is that BSA is an altruistic organization composed of selfless volunteers with the mission of building boys into men of character. The reality is that BSA is a corporation driven by corporate motives. Money - not altruism - drives BSA, just like any corporation. While many BSA volunteers may indeed be selfless, BSA corporate leaders largely ignore and dismiss the opinions of front-line volunteers in decision-making.
