  1. This time last year my kid had not yet heard the talk at school about Cub Scouts and being a leader wasn't even on my radar. Tomorrow I will be in full uniform with my DE and CM for Boy and Girl Scout Talks at two schools.

  2. Yes, I wonder why they did not use "stripper" meaning to reduce or strip layers?

  3. I'm getting to the point where I don't remember much! I used to be very, very active on this site (with the old format) but I've been fairly inactive for almost 10 years. Back then too much posting was about girls and God. ;-)

  4. Last week I travelled to West Lafayette to see the Mizzou / Purdue football game. Along for the trip was my family and my brother's family and my sister. Well, during the tailgate I got a kick out of the fact that my boys (ages 27 and 26) used their old Patrol cooler and stove for the tail gate. My oldest was in charge of the grill - burgers for all (he had a steak!) and they cleaned up everything. Their aunts & uncles and cousins were impressed. Their Scout training came in very useful. It brought back a flood of memories of when we were all about 10 years or more younger and th

  5. 4.2.3.4 Positions of Responsibility “Serve actively in your unit for a period of … months in one or more … positions of responsibility” is an accomplishment every candidate for Star, Life, or Eagle must achieve. The following will help to determine whether a Scout has fulfilled the requirement. 4.2.3.4.1 Positions Must Be Chosen From AmongThose Listed. The position must be listed in the position of responsibility requirement shown in the most current edition of Boy Scout Requirements. Since more than one member may hold some positions—“instructor,” for example—it is expected that eve

  6. I'll defer to John-in-KC - I've probably got outdated sources. From John's referenced material: The purpose of Star, Life, and Eagle Scout requirements calling for Scouts to be active for a period of months involves impact. Since we prepare young people to go forth, and essentially, make a positive difference in our American society, we judge that a member is “active” when his level of activity in Scouting, whether high or minimal, has had a sufficiently positive influence toward this end. Use the following three sequential tests to determine whether the requirement has been met

  7. Charter organizations can already charter more than one pack, troop, etc., so IMO, the whole "linked troop" is just a way for them to say that the program isn't co-ed (yet) *wink*.

  8. This morning was supposed to be a school wide assembly, however at the last minute it was decided to go to each classroom and give the talk. I am a DL so I didnt get to talk, but I did hear the talk 17 times and it was a good learning experience. We go to the other school this afternoon and I think it will be an assembly. I am anxious to see how many show up tomorrow night.

  9. Sunday morning I IMed my CM and asked if we needed to even be concerned about this at the unit level. After reading the FB, I could get nothing out of it. He only suggested the impact on us may be how the DE changes his approaches in order to reach his goal. I am no fan of corporate doings anyway, so I am going to worry about this at all. I have a den flag to finish up. Our pack is growing and after Tuesday night I am sure we will grow a lot more. Where we are going to physical put new dens is on my plate. In short, I am just a Wolf Den Leader and I am gonna do my little thin

  11. I'll take the under on that bet / expectation. Rather than 10 years, there will be "survey" and "groundswell of support" sometime in 2020 / 21 and we will be coed. The challenge will be ramping up any actual functioning girl troops or enough "linked" (wink wink) troops. BSA will need to decide how to effectively provide a good program and opportunity for the the girls coming out of cubs. Honestly it takes a minute to stand up a troop and get the institutional knowledge to have a well functioning troop. There may be some Girl troops and they will be new, then they will look ove

  14. I think my personal answer to all this is, if National sends me a memo or issues a new Troop Committee Guidebook explaining what I, as a troop committee member and advancement chair, am supposed to differently, I will read it and decide what to do. (Meaning, either stay and follow the new protocols, or not stay.) If on the other hand it doesn't affect my position, I am not going to worry about it. This is one of the main reasons I have never gotten involved at the district level, there is less "insulation" from all the "great ideas" and fads coming out of National. The other main reaso

  15. If I thought they were going to simplify unit JTE to “how many unit camp outs did you do, how many service projects did you do?” (Everything else being auto captured by ScoutNet) if I thought the G2SS would be made less restrictive, and the activities chart opened up, rather than continually closed down if I thought FOS would become “this is how we turn on the lights at the council office, and pay for the ongoing maintenance at our camps” i might buy it i don’t know what this actually is, besides buzzword bingo. BSA needs an effective financial management s

  16. Adding layers of complexity @AltadenaCraig will be a drag on your unit. You don't want to go through all of the paperwork and extra chartering fee to have pseudo venturing. The method is "leadership development" in Boy Scouts and "leadership" in venturing. If you don't want the crew officers to make their own decisions, you don't have a crew, you have a "crew, except." No amount of gun-slinging high adventure will make up for imposition on Venturing leadership. A crew needs officers, at least four ... and many activity chairs. And they have to do real work. They really have to put

  17. I only have one at the moment, but in my own unit's uniform closet (identical in nature to yours), I found a shirt that fits me perfectly, although this one is long-sleeved.. Since I am in my uniform at least a few times a week, I am thinking about turning it into a second shirt so that I can hopefully keep either from getting too worn too quickly. I also have a pair of socks in each of the three lengths, three different fabric options for my pants/shorts convertibles, a leather belt and the standard green web, four different neckerchief slides to go with my half dozen neckerchief option

  18. I did learn a new word on that page, “delayer”, meaning to reduce the number of layers. If anyone had said “delayer” to me before just now, I would have guessed that it meant a person or thing that causes a delay. And I love the bullet-point where they say that one of the ways they are going to streamline things is by creating new jargon. As opposed to the dozen or so other times they have introduced new jargon in the last 50 years or so. I can hardly wait.

  19. I always punt my response to a face to face discussions. Email is for: sending/recieving documents setting up appointment date/time thanking someone after the meeting It is NOT for: discussions So for this situation, I would reply to the scout's email with: "I am happy to provide some guidance and clarity with the cooking merit badge process. Will you be at the next scout meeting? I will arrive 10 minutes early to give you my undivided attention. Please let me know if this works for you. I can also be available at other times if this date/time is

  21. Oh for crying out loud, the patrol method is workable even under these circumstances. You've just got to want it to happen. Keep throwing up excuses and you'll get your wish I'm mentoring a new scoutmaster of a small urban troop that's reorganizing. This will be their relaunch from the summer. She's trained and gaining experience continuously. She wants a successful troop program for her son and all of his friends. She has several adults getting trained as we speak, but I always tell her to give the program to the patrol. They've responded well over the last year and had a great su
