  1. BSA, most of whose employees literally do not know what the Patrol Metod is, have now abandoned it, and so have abandoned Boy Scouting.

  2. BSA just past the 10,000 mark for girls in Cub Scouts with nearly 4,000 Webelos. It will be interesting to see these numbers after fall recruiting when most Packs add new members. Will update if I see more numbers in October. That will be the interesting one.

  3. Flattering, a scout uniform? I'd settle for functional, though neat is good.

  4. Thank you for the ideas. Here is our plan, but as Russell Ziskey said, Custer had a plan. We're doing a troop backpacking trip in September. We'll make it flexible based on abilities and camping in a primitive campground site that can handle our not so big troop. The Philmont shakedowns will be just for the Philmont crew, but if there's room on a trip, younger, capable scouts can join. So it won't be separate patrols. We don't have enough age eligible scouts to even completely fill a 12 person crew, including adults. I joined Potomac Appalachian Trail Club to rent one of thei

  5. Philmont bound? Welcome to the "hike a month" club! There is precious little that is more fulfilling than sitting on a rock some distance from your crew and watching them, after an arduous treck through a land of rocks and bogs, settle on a poncho between two large hemlocks and break out the deck of cards for a game of spoons (sporks?). A ten point buck who had not yet dropped his antlers for summer wandered in to check out their shenanigans. On last year's wilderness hike, the boys built a "fort" with parachord and tarps on night 1, and waded in a stream until they found a pool wher

  7. BSA DOES NOT DECIDE WHO IS A "MANDATORY REPORTER" FOR PURPOSES OF THE LAW.. Facing the realities of some of the more absurd aspects of the pronouncements of the Safety Bubble, BSA has ruled that a child's parent is, ipso facto, a "registered Scouter," for purposes of meetings with a Merit Badge Counselor. Hopefully, there will be more push back against Safety by the rest of BSA scouting.

  8. In mashmaster’s defense, I told the same to my son and his reply to me was similar to mm jr’s. I encouraged him to track them for future reference. He didn’t follow that advice. Now as he is closing in on Eagle, he commented he wish he had tracked them as it would save the time and effort of re-doing some of the, now, mundane task. I simply shrug and smile. There are a few life lessons in that exchange. I’m curious how many he recognizes.

  9. As this thread is about preparing for girls in the youth Scout portion of the organization (since they were already adult leaders, on Ships, in Crews, and part of Posts), here is what is happening at my unit. The committee and all parents of current Scouts were asked to vote on the committee sponsoring a girl's troop. The vote was in favor, but not unanimous. A sharing of gear, and some financial sponsorship will be provided to help get things off of the ground. I have already offered to be an adult leader of the new Troop. My goal is simple - ensure that as we build a Troop with ma

  10. I wonder how they are measuring that without the formal fall registration. I know of a number of units that will gain up tp 6 girls just by siblings joining and more with friends and fall recruiting. Overs this is great news.

  11. When I talk with female scouters there are complaints that the shirts and pants don’t fit women’s bodies. They are cut for men’s shapes. One example I heard is on pants. Girls have larger hips after puberty. Breasts are also cause the tops to not fit in many cases. Many women leaders simply don’t buy the pants or buy pants at 3rd party stores that kinda match. Uniform shirts they just deal with. Finally, some religions require that women not wear pants... or so I’m told. That said I know Orthodox Jews don’t allow pants but they require full length skirts... so I’m not sure what religi

  12. IMO, if there is "no gender" in Scouting, USA then the uniform - shirts and pants style should be the same for all.
