  1. It's a sad state of affairs when our first instinct is to think that it's all about controlling the scout. The MB application is about the scout maintaining control of his advancement. This bit is about making sure the troop is accountable when a scout completes a MB. If he never gets awarded a badge, he has, in his section of the blue card, proof that the unit received the record of his advancement. Scoutmasters go AWOL never to return and their shoe-box of unit copies of blue go with them (as my brother's did in the 50s). Councils loose records. Foreign agents hack electronic storage.

  2. We currently have six girls who are already meeting/planning. Active committee (setting up financials). SM is a longtime ASM who is easily the most skilled backwoods camper in the Troop! Also have an ASM lined up— 25 y/o, Venturer. They are ready to roll! We are recruiting the same way we recruit boys— word of mouth, mainly. Flyers. Community service events. I suspect they will be up to 10-11 girls by February.

  3. That's an issue between the scout and the MB counselor. The SM should have no influence on how it affects the badge. BC should have been immediately issued. The early SM signature is not about filtering or choosing the right counselor or doing some type of quality checks. The signature exists so that the scout regularly talks with his scoutmaster and so the scoutmaster knows about the scout's current activities. It is not meant to be a blocking step.

  4. Westley: If only we had a wheelbarrow, that would be something for our OA lodge activities... Inigo: Where did we put that wheelbarrow the scout had? Fezzik: Over the scout I think. Westley: Well why didn't you list that among our assets in the first place? Oh, what I wouldn't give for a black cloak. Inigo: There, we cannot help you. Fezzik: [pulls out a black cloak] Will this do? Inigo: Where did you get that? Fezzik: At the troop's scout closet. It fit so nice, they said I could keep it. Fezzik: Welcome to the OA! There will be no survivors!

  5. I'm confused. When done ... The MB counselor keeps his part and the scout receives two parts back, his part and the troop's part. When the scout gives it to the troop to record, the scout should only give the troop's part. The scout should always maintain control of his part. He should never give up that part as it's his proof he completed it. It protects him from troop screw ups. The troop still has their part to use to record advancement.

  8. In our area, tigers (and lions now) have to have an adult with them at all times while at day camp/council wide events where there are shooting sports. So the responsible adult was always around to help the younger kid stay safe anyway. Seems like an unnecessary rule. edit: Wait they're still offering the shooting sports award to tigers though?

  9. It will be a problem for my area. We have several major events during the year that include Tigers, and now Lions, that have BB gun ranges.Because it is a free flow type event with no set times, just wait in line for your turn. Because of the numbers, we cannot tell who is what level unless they are wearing their neckers. I already see problems with this rule being enforced. On a different note, I am glad my youngest will be Crossing Over soon.

  10. Well, I made a YPT report. I had conversations with the SM, ASM, COR beforehand, and felt it was the right thing. We will see what happens— my bet is absolutely nothing!!

  11. High Cliff State Park, on the other side of Lake Winnebago from Oshkosh has 2 tent only group campsites and 6 "standard" (ie rv but tents can be used too) non-electric group campsites. Could be booked for Airventure. About an hour away, near Waupaca, is Hartman Creek State Park which has 5 standard group sites - each with a capacity of up to 50 people.

  12. Are you looking for a scout camp nearby? Most of them would be participating in summer camp activities and would not be able to have space for you. Explorer Posts and Venturing Crews volunteer at the show, and they should fall under YPT regarding the showering questions (I do not know exactly) It appears they have their own camp they occupy during the show so that may solve the separate facility issue. I do not know if they could accommodate you or not but worth a shot. http://www.aviationexplorerbase.org/

  13. Not much conversation in our district. One of our two packs at the CO may be adding girls, but I believe they determined to hold off on Lions (comment was Holy Mother of God...6 years of Cubs!!!!) For the troop we are continuing business as usual. Determination is that we will not be part of any linked troop. If the CO and some currently unnamed folks want to start a Girls troop, we wish them well. We would be glad to have a conversation on what has worked for us and best practices.

  15. Back in the day, my old lodge used velvet robes which were the same color as Hef's but with a different cut and hood. Rather intimidating back then.

  16. I was there. Super busy though. It was my first NOAC so I attended as many seminars and events as I could. I was especially intrigued to join the LodgeMaster developer group to see what I can contribute after spending the last 20+ years in enterprise applications. I met a lot of devoted Scouts & Scouters throughout my travels at NOAC. We took a charter bus from the Illowa Council. The ride there was uneventful. The ride back was very warm at first with the AC being out on the bus. The AC was eventually repaired. "NOAC" on the way home was referred to as "NO AC."

  18. They have not. And I have never heard of them shirking away from their promise. But, they will ask that the victim to use their personal insurance first. I did carry additional insurance when I was a SM because two parents threatened me with law suits. It just seemed like a good idea at the time. The parents backed off when they heard both sides of their son's story. If that is how parents react to youth organization volunteers, I can't imagine what my high school teacher kids hear from their parents. Barry

  20. No typo. Shooting Sports Awards book was not updated when this policy came out. It is now in the process of being updated. On a different note, it appears that troops, ships, and crews will no longer need council approval for the Multigun Airsoft Expereince. It is no longer showing it is no longer showing that approval is needed with the new guidelines.
