  1. Just 2 cents - you can handle another post, right? Our troop once had a committee chair who was difficult to work with and antagonistic towards my son with ADHD. I know there are some Scouters out there who do not do well with kids with differences, and who put know-it-all-ness, power trips and ego into their volunteer jobs. It's disgusting. You are not alone in that kind of experience and I'm sorry that your family had to struggle through it. I hope you and the Elks throw your son a fantastic court of honor! Congrats to your son!

  2. I was looking for some supplemental materials for helping to teach basic compass skills and came across this video. It's hilarious while also covering some good basic information. Enjoy!

  3. I'm not against charges, but there is no official charge. The charge is whatever one wants to make it. I like the idea of another Eagle scout giving the new Eagle scout a charge: "... I charge you to undertake your citizenship with a solemn dedication. ... " Like what you have above. On a personal note, I just have never liked the adhoc repeat-after-me pledges. It just seems a bit over-the-top. My view is that the scout oath and law are official. The Nicene Creed is official for my church. The Pledge Of Allegiance is official for our country. "for me" ... pledges are pre

  4. Thank you so much Wisconsin momma. Its good to hear from another mom out there. This is exactly the problem I have. Meanwhile others are asking for inside stories and that there must be something more that I'm not telling. Our committee chair is exactly like how you described yours to be. Theres no explanation. It disgusts me that people like this can be allowed to be leaders. And quite frankly, someone needs to step up and voice it. People just cant walk away from this kind of abuse or discrimination.

  7. Have you considered taking your son on a camping trip without uniforms? Our best Webelos campout was the one we organized ourselves at a state park. Granted, it took a lot of planning to provide food and activities for 15 scouts and their parents for 5 days, but those now 30 year old adults tell me that was some of their best cub scouting memories. Well, if it's just the two of you, that would be easy trip to plan. Barry

  8. Most of these appear to be period insignia of US Army formations and a couple of rank insignia. The Lincoln appears to be from the 84th Division (Rail Splitters). The Shield with the Cross of Lorraine from the 79th Division. The mountains in shield the 80th division, next one may be a special unit, the Circle A is the 3rd Army, the red diamond the 5th Division, The green with the horn appears to be a special unit, a couple of sets of sergeant stripes that I can't quite ID yet (They appear to be upside down) and the last one is the 4th Diivision (Ivy Division). I'll poke around for thos

  10. A swim area is the final responsibility of ADULTS, not youth members. Read the G2SS on this topic. If your unit is going to create a swim area from whole cloth, you need to do it right...that means checking the bottom, marking the area, and having equipment. Spend the money to get the right equipment v Having a PFD on a rope is a sorry excuse for a proper rescue tube or torpedo buoy. Finally, GO is, was, and will always be the rescue method of last resort.

  11. I have sat on many EBOR, both in my own Troop and as the District rep for many other troops. I agree, this EBOR was flawed. Once the Board deliberates, the vote MUST be unanimous. If the EBOR denies the Eagle, it can be appealed to the District Advancement committee. And in my experience, it is a rubber stamp approval at that level. If the committee member had "reservations" about the Scout's worthiness, the time to abstain was when he was asked to be on the Board. That being said, the EBOR is a done deal. The District, Council and National have upheld the decision and the Scout has hi

  12. I can't rule anything out at the Constitution-free zone that is our modern border, but this shouldn't be any different than someone who smokes dope in Amsterdam, has a beer at Oktoberfest, or eats some raw milk cheese in France. Besides taxation the US doesn't typically try to enforce laws outside their jurisdiction for US citizens.

  13. I was the first Eagle in my Troop. I inched out a Scout, much younger, who had announced "publicly", that he would be Eagle in so many months (he did the math, so many months required in each rank), which would have made him the first Eagle. Us older Scouts (who had been having fun camping and hiking , not so much worrying about ranks), got together and said "we can't let this happen". So we cooperated with Merit Badge classes, service projects, activity planning. The young Scout was good, but "life happens", and he had family issues and did not meet his schedule. He became the third Eag
