  1. JMO, but troops shouldn't automatically award Scout rank at crossover because: "All requirements for Scout rank must be completed as a member of a troop or as a Lone Scout. If you already completed these requirements as part of the Webelos Scouting Adventure, simply demonstrate your knowledge or skills to your Scoutmaster or other designated leader after joining the troop." In addition, the "How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parents Guide" pamphlet is different in the Boy Scout Handbook vs. the Webelos Handbook. If the Scout does the pamphlet exercises with a pare

  2. I watched that video. Not impressed. In fact, it's a bit disturbing to me. Nothing in the practice shooting (which isn't much different than many of the shooting games in a video arcade) suggests hunting at all. Instead, it looks more like an assault course for law enforcement set in a "rural" environment.

  3. You each need a good pair of hiking boots or trail shoes for summer camp and other scout activities. Be sure to wear proper socks, a pair of thin, lightweight, wicking liners and a heavier pair of outer socks. The 2 layer system helps lessen the chance of blisters. The friction that causes them is reduced by the 2 layers of socks, they slide over each other rather than your skin sliding in the boots. You can wear the outer socks a couple of days in a row, but you should wear clean liners each day (liners can be washed in a ink at camp and hung to dry). Fit your boots/shoes using the 2 sock sys

  4. Obviously, the closing of Philmont for the summer left them with a warehouse full of trail food. Here is the info for those interested in stocking up a bit for personal or troop/crew use. http://www.toothoftimetraders.com/2018-Trail-Meals/2021/Dept

  5. It's also role modeling issue for me. Locally a high school student was expelled for two weeks because he found a butter knife in his lunch box in the lunch room. Turns out mom put the knife in the lunch box for him to spread the peanut butter on his sandwich. She didn't understand the rule and she didn't tell her son. Our youth learn how to use judgement by watching their role models and they spend most of their day as a youth at school watching adults in action. Where are they going to learn to judge behavior fairly if the adults aren't showing any judgment at all. Barry

  6. Turns out it's from a unit in Santa Tecla, El Salvador for their 50th anniversary. https://www.facebook.com/689570167822190/photos/a.1016987398413797.1073741839.689570167822190/1016988595080344/?type=3&theater https://www.facebook.com/gruposcout20elsalvador/photos/p.1050170995061372/1050170995061372/?type=1&theater

  8. My Troop just returned from our Alaska trip yesterday and I would like to provide you a review of this program; The thought of this trip started 2 1/2 years ago. I soon will retire from the Scoutmaster position and wanted to help provide the scouts with a memory of a lifetime. I had been to Alaska twice in the past with my family and friends and had a pretty good idea of what the scouts would like to experience. I gave them some options and came up with an itinerary. We offered many fund raising opportunities and many of the scouts funded their own way. We choose an eight day van to

  9. To answer your question, no. I don't know much about the TAY numbers. Are you saying that because there are double the available youth JTE expects the total number of youth participating should double? That's nuts. The best advice I have heard about JTE, from my new DE no less, is work on the program.

  10. I don't view it that way. I also think that Totin' chip should be one of the first things a Boy Scout learns.

  13. Good points. Another annoyance is when activity X is prohibited except at a BSA facility, as if safe, quality programs cannot possibly be offered elsewhere. Which brings me to a recent announcement of, exclusive to Summit, the National Hunters Education course. We do hunter education locally, outside of scouting, with instructors from Mass Wildlife and the host sportsmen club. Hunting rules and regulations, and licensing are state specific, plus scouts can bring their own firearm/bow to training.

  16. Venturingfest! Like many other venturing events, Venturers will hold dances at a council camp near you. Glow sticks are par for the course. SBR, since its inception has been allowing officers to organize such events accordingly. This is nothing new to scouting at large either. The O/A handbook from my youth had a chapter on social events, including dances where scouts would bring dates. Not my thing, but they were part of the schedule in my lodge. And later, in college, I met young women who were invited to such events. So, in this instance, in a sense, Venturing is bringing bac

  17. So.... following an expansion of the group in recent years and some attrition in our older tents I convinced the exec committee to release their grip on the purse strings and buy some new tents. We have some very nice tents that we like, namely Vango Omegas, you can still buy them so we bought some more. If it ain't broke don't fix it. As we like to say this side of the pond. Cheapest source of them is Amazon. 8 new tents. About £1700 spent. This evenings scout program wasn't going to fill the whole evening (second half of pottery for creative challenge involving firing their cr

  19. If one claims to be introducing a program, then I think it is implicit in that claim that it will be separate, not the same program that already exists. Why would an existing program need an introduction?

  20. Ah. Perhaps that is the reason why I have never felt an affinity for Venturing.
