  1. IMO, school is where civics should be taught, scouting is where it can be practiced. - responsibility, service. Remember when a single, thick merit badge pamphlet covered all citizenship merit badges? My $0.02,

  2. In the 1980s, National set a goal of increasing the percentage number of Eagles, which at the time was around 3 percent. They made a number of changes that included New Scout Patrols and First Class in the First Year. I imagine that is still the motivation for home study type merit badges I imagine that your age was at least 14 years of age when you worked those badges. As I said earlier, these sit down types of advancement requirements are easier for older scouts to accept and digest. What makes this worse is because National is turning into a BSA into a more family progr

  3. Knights and noble steeds Knights: cardboard helmets shields and swords, heraldic decoration of same, maybe a costume for good measure. Noble steeds: Make backpacks out of sticks lashed with twine, tie some things to it. Two hollowed out halves of coconuts. The steed has to follow the brave knight around and be their horse. Hunt the Holy Grail. Maybe don't visit castle anthrax. Design a shrubbery. A nice one. With a picket fence. Sorry! Bring silly! I'll stop that. Lance tests? One kid in a wheelbarrow* with a "lance" is pushed across the field and tries

  4. If it is especially hot, STAY HYDRATED. Drink the health of the King (and/or Queen?) . All knights and squires can not refuse to drink the health of the king/queen. Which brings up the idea, the Camp Director should be CROWNED with due ceremony and pomp the first day.... Scout Skills ? Nay, "Squire School". Nature Pavilion? Nay, "Herbs and Notions". Medical Pavilion? Nay, "Bloodletting Site" Give appropriate awards to the Staff Scouts : Sir Cumspect, Sir Pentine, Sir Leans a lot, Sir Cumfrence, Lady Ladelah, Lady Downundie, Sir Lee, etc.

  6. I'm not. I'm the product of a Catholic elementary, high school, and post secondary university. In high school, 30-40% of the students were not Catholic. And that was not just my HS, but all of them. That's because the Catholic schools provided better education than public. Kinda sad really. My mom worked for the public school system, sent my sister and I to Catholic schools. I had friends whose moms taught in public schools, and sent them to Catholic schools. Heck one girl I dated had parents who were principals in the public schools, and sent her and her sister to Catholic school.

  7. There once was an age restriction of sorts, one had to be First Class to work on merit badges and only your next rank could be worked on.

  8. And then create a stink in the media when rules are applied based on those Catholic values.

  10. Especially if it's wicked cold I'll change to clean and dry clothes for bed. Sure, it sucks for a minute while you change but it's much warmer than sleeping in damp clothes.

  12. I think this falls under "it depends." A seasoned committee won't give two hoots if a member is a DE or a CSE. When Mike Sarbaugh was our SE, and he dropped in on a council committee, it was like "Hi Mike, take a seat and don't eat all of the pizza." Our council has pro's who are SMs and ASMs. They are good people. Your scouts might get recruited for camp staff a little more readily, but that's about it. I would caution to not expect a pro to be your roundtable representative. He'll be quite busy with logistics and paperwork. Send the SM and other MC's to do the handshaking with othe

  13. In a Nalgene bottle before camp, crack 12 eggs. 8 oz of milk, 8 oz of shredded cheese, 1 lb cubed ham/cooked bacon crumbled/precooked breakfast sausage, 1 T worchester sauce. In a bag put in 8 oz of seasoned bread crumbs, 1 tsp dry mustard. Start coals for 350 degrees Shake nalgene until eggs are scrambled Pour egg mixture into dutch oven (I use a parchment paper liner) Pour dry mixture into the dutch oven, lightly mix it in. Cover dutch oven Cook for 40 minutes or so, start checking at 30 minutes to see if the eggs are set cut into slices like pizza a

  14. Here is the Lava cake recipe: https://www.campingforfoodies.com/chocolate-lava-dutch-oven-cakes/ Key things I noticed: the foil cup holders are lined with parchment paper. Remove the parchment paper as the stick. right before putting the batter into the cups, put a shot of spray oil into the foil cup preheat the dutch oven it makes a difference After 10 minutes check the cakes every minute, you want the tops to basically just dry out. 13-14 minutes is the times that have worked for me. A side of vanilla ice cream is amazing with it. The waiting is the
