  1. Crust/cardboard on a frozen pizza...it tastes all the same.

  2. Jim Lovell, captain of Apollo 13, is an Eagle scout (now age 90). The Apollo 13 mission was active 48 years ago as everyone worked to bring the astronauts home safely. Our family is watching the 1995 movie, the boys found it very interesting.

  3. So funny. As the kids left, we took on housing 1st year fellows from our church's college outreach (think missionaries in training and you get the idea), what with their ministry and social contacts the house is rarely empty and often quite full. Empty nest? Well, if nests have revolving doors, maybe? And then there's the occasional spur-of-the-moment Kazakh's invite to random events, like the symphony backstage or ballet dancer's birthday party. (Don't ask. I couldn't explain if I tried. I just take it as a chance to try and fit "moose and squirrel" into the conversation.) It's not

  4. Sounds like stepping back was YOUR choice...do what your heart tells you. I have seen many parents (myself included), stay active after their sons left or aged out. My own sons were in their 30s before I "retired"...I was having too much fun and treasured my adult friends and "time in the woods".

  6. That is exactly what we do. During my stint as SM, we had two or three BOR leaders who recruited parents standing around, including new parents. The scouts have to request a BOR by signing up on a BOR request sheet. We always try to do the review the same day they sign up, which requires building a board with those standing around at that moment. The leaders give the volunteers a list of basic questions to help them get involved. Typically the leader starts with a few questions to set a tone for the BOR and to keep the question appropriate. As you said, it is a great way for parents to get inv

  7. You were right. It was time for me to follow up. The word is that the registrar needs to process it through the system. But I now at least have a receipt for my check. (And I did send the YPT certificate, etc.) Thanks for the advice. My previous experience with BSA? None to speak of. Previous experience with scouting: GSUSA, including TOFS troops, and opportunities to interact with Girl Guides from other countries. This left me with the sense that scouting/guiding is not an activity you go and do once in a while, instead, being a scout/guide is something you are. And it is

  8. You're gonna get as many different opinions here as there are options + 1. BSA left it open. Your boys have crossed into a (hopefully) boy led troop. So they should ask their patrol leader (PL) what would be best to do. If the PL doesn't know, he can ask the senior patrol leader (SPL), who can then ask the (SM), who may contact the committee member (MC) who is the advancement chair (AC) who will write us on this site and share your misery. Then waste precious time with your committee chair (CC) at round table (RT) while the roundtable commishioner (RC) or district executive (DE) make up so
