  1. Wasn't sure where to share this. Open Discussion it is. Useful as a skit, or an intro for an award night? Apologies to Dos Equis,,,, The Most Interesting Scouter He named his daughters “Powell “ and “Baden”…. When he went to Philmont, he gave the Tooth of Time a root canal…. His Scout Law has 14 points…. He is… The Most Interesting Scouter….. “I do not always go camping, but when I do, I go to ((insert camp name))” . “Stay Scouty, my friend”. He has a whole Totin, not merely a Chip.

  2. No. If it was required to be an official scouting activity, it would say something such as what camping says "at designated scouting activities or events". Same with any other MB requirement. Trust and verify. Picture. Who was with you? Let me talk to them. etc. etc. etc.

  3. Guided trips for sure. However most public lands are available to use for free. The only costs are food/gas. Much cheaper than summer camp for same duration of time. If you are interested, I regularly adventure in many of the locations much less than 10 hours from you. I am happy to help you plan a high adventure type trip for your patrol.

  5. Pack 77 Den Leader and Southern Illinois University (SIU) associate math professor Wesley Calvert has created a new Nova award based on the mathematics of symmetry, Fearful Symmetry . A few years ago, SIU began playing host to an annual STEM University event, which gave scouts the chance to earn Nova and other merit awards. During the 2016 event, Calvert met Lisa Balbes, who serves on a national committee charged with reviewing proposals for such awards. “We talked about the need for additional math awards within the program, and after continued conversations with her and another m

  9. If you pass the test, you've learned it (or already knew it).

  10. I wish that YPT would do that. It has to do with the decision of the course designers. Some courses allow you to just take the test, with the importance being the knowledge of the subject matter. Other courses require you to sit through the whole thing before taking the test, with both exposure to the material as well as knowledge of the material being important. I'm in the instructional design field, and both are valid ways for courses to operate. It just depends on what the reason for the course is. Personally, I think for a one time course, the best design is exposure to the material as

  11. Along the lines of experience... "Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from poor judgement."

  12. Ooh, me first... "Experience is the hardest teacher. It gives the test first, then the lesson." Ha! I really like the quote. It may not be "motivational" but it strongly fits with our family motto of "Be Kind and Persevere."

  13. Yes, in our area, dens cross over as a single patrol. Occasionally, if a single scout crosses over or a small den crosses over, then they will be combined with an exist patrol.

  14. What I mean is everyone should add one quote per day. We should dozens of new quotes a day (I assume we have dozens of members). If only three of us add a quote, then maybe the one per day should go away. Sorry for the confusion. Barry

  16. NSPs officially came about August , 1989. Same time they did away with Skill Awards, time requirements for T-2-1 ranks,, no more Scouts on BORs, etc. But some troops apparently did it like your troop prior to that, and it influenced National. Although I bet how the LDS troops do it, i.e. 11 year old Scout Patrol, caused national to create NSPs. I know my troop tried it in 1986 at the request of the council, and it was a complete failure. Every time I've seen NSPs in action, it is either a failure, or turns into Webelos 3. But that has been my experience. Some ideas.

  17. Most of our “pack meetings” are activities or outings. Cake bake, camp fire, PWD, Blue and Gold - pool party, camping outing, Bear Scout carnival, egg drop are 7 out of our 9 “pack meetings”. We also have activities in the summer but none of those are traditional meetings. So we have about two traditional meetings a year. One is the first meeting where we do the initial kickoff of the year including popcorn sales and the other is a standard meeting. This has worked for us and I cannot imagine having any meeting where we talk to parents. The CC owns dealing with the parents, pack meetings

  18. I'm not sure if it was this thread or another, but we talked about how to describe the program succinctly so everyone can understand it. Hillcourt called this ""Fun with a purpose." I'd say for a cub the purpose is to develop friendships to get ready for boy scouts. For boy scouts the purpose is responsibility, to God and country, to others, and to self. But it has to be via having fun. That seems to be the part that gets dropped. The documentation that come out of national seems to lead the way in dropping fun. More requirements that aren't any more fun. Rather than dilute the fun the

  19. @Pselb, membership decline isn't the problem, it's a symptom. It is the effect of policies and procedures, culture, and economy. As individual scouters, we can manage some of those things more than others. But, by reading about each other and sharing what we learn with others (at multiple levels of responsibility, from the troop librarian to the chief scout executive) we hope to help everyone. So, don't expect a consensus statement from these forums. Do expect what you have to say to be taken seriously. BTW, as a kid, I was all about bugs (and building a computer- 4 bit processo
