    Hard to understand parents who shop around for the best school, teachers, doctors, tutors, coaches ...would think Boy Scouts is the same everywhere. But when I ask, they remind me we are a national organization , wear the same uniform, same handbooks, same Oath and Law,... Well yes, but all scouting is local, too late. My $0.02

    So so true. This is the same for why I cringe with certain phrases such as boy led. It's almost always not constructive and used more as a knock against others. IMHO, we should all stop saying who's boy led and who's not boy led. Be specific and identify behaviors and habits that help. Identify good practices.

    Freds right, if the scout has done what is required of him, anything else is adding requirements. Now I'm not preaching about the goods and evils of adding requirements, I personally think there are times and places for everything when it comes to growth. But, I have observed and experienced similar situations like this one and if push comes to shove all the way up the ladder to National, the scout wins every time. Actually this situation is very common with new scoutmasters because they tend to get emotionally tied up in old business trying to set their new standards on the troop program. And what makes it worse is the other adults have and opinion as well, which just adds complexity and confusion for the new SM. In reality this young man is not your scout because you weren't his mentor. I used to teach Scoutmasters that most problems like this scout don't just suddenly happen. The scout was allowed by his mentors to developed habits that has put him where he sits today. To some degree, I feel for scouts who have go through several scoutmasters because each scoutmaster his a different set of standards and expectations. In my mind, this scout should have had a few conferences before now. You are the new counscience of the program and you can work with scouts more actively as they grow and mature in the program to prevent this kinds of situations. But is it really fair to hold this scout to your new more rigid expectations now? Learn from this experience to better prepare you for the next, because there will be a next. And by the way, leave what you think about dad out of the equation. Yes, he might very well be the scout's main motivation. But adding that detail to your mix only makes you more frustrated and doesn't change the outcome at all. It's just a note in how to work with families of your future scouts. Barry

    If he did the work, yes. The requirements for Eagle are really not that huge. A gung-ho kid can knock them out if desired fairly quick. The key is we mentor youth through our interactions and guidance. But as for rank, that is a standard defined by BSA that is fairly clear. If the scout has done the project as approved in the proposal, it gets signed. If he has the other rank items complete, then can has earned a right to complete his Eagle rank. It might be worth a good discussion on what happened. Beyond that, it's his advancement, not ours.

    This is quite good. I believe God's reflections of anger in the whole First Testament are examples of using anger specifically for teaching. However, I also found that disappointment was my best tool for showing a scout how I felt about his performance. Maybe because body language is honest and sincere, but I rarely had to add words for impact. It worked well in our troop because we discouraged yelling (raised voices) as a form of motivating action. I'm not sure if this style of reflecting to scouts requires practice and maturity, but I had to grow into it. Again well said. We each have a different style for influencing scouts. Consistency is very powerful because the scouts will quickly learn your leadership style and count on it. MattR says to let everyone know before hand, but I found that when leadership actions are consistent, reputation and integrity will eventually lead the way. Words rarely trump consistent actions. For outsiders looking in, the leadership and role modeling style of the dominant leader (usually the SM) will become the obvious character of the whole troop. So put humility on the top of your list of practicing traits, because nobody gets it right the first time. Barry

    110% True. You are not helping the Scout. We have a case where one Scout does NOT want to leave daddy's side. He may be technically meeting the requirements, but he is not mastering the requirements as was the expectation in the BSHB and G2A until recently. What's ironic is that we do have one Scout who MUST sleep with his dad for medical reasons and he "HATE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!" (his quote).

    I thought I was very well behaved as I silently repeated my mantra "I am a volunteer, I don't have to do this" 100x. One of these same kadies is the GSUSA Mom who said her son "better hurry up and get his Eagle before age 15 or all this time has been wasted".

    The Bill of Rights was enacted to limit the power of government, not to expand it. The framers did not intend for the Second Amendment to be misinterpreted and misused to expand the scope of governmental interference on the private citizen. It amazes me that anyone would argue that the Bill of Rights calls for an expansion of the power of government.

    The Scout (and his father) have requested a meeting to discuss his POR requirement. We could definitely use a Troop Guide for our New Scout Patrol. I’d be satisfied if he showed up to help at their weekly meetings once a month. And teach them specific skills (not just be a warm body in the room). We’ll see how he responds to that idea.

    This is a totally different discussion that can go on a long long time. ... I think people should be able to choose, but I don't think parents and scouts know what to look for when shopping. From what I've seen there is a dynamic between what is a good troop and what looks good. Also, there is an issue of cities with many troops and a few grow to be mega troops and the others starve and look like pale images. It's unhealthy for a troop to be really large and to be starving for members. IMHO, the current troop shopping model does NOT work. ... but a different thread.

    This comes from the new policy that adults attending events over 72 hrs in duration have to be registered leaders (so they would have the background check). I've seen this in a couple of leader guides for this summer's summer camp season. New policy is in effect June 1 (so, starting this summer camp season).

    I would imagine that BSA would have filed a trademark by now if a new name is rolling out. I’ve been watching the trademark listing and haven’t seen anything yet. Girl Guides does appear to be available for anyone to claim.

    Some of us history-minded GSUSA oldtimers who are thinking of switching to BSA might like "Girl Guides". But I see two big problems with "Girls Guides" as a name for BSA4G: GSUSA would hate it, because they are the WAGGGS member in the USA, and BSA is not. And the girls themselves who don't know much scouting history, just like their older American sisters 100 years ago, will want to be called "scouts" and not something else.

    Interesting Podcast. That is my first introduction to ScoumasterCG. There is definitely some good content, but nobody will accuse Clarke Green of being too succinct. I suppose his nugget from that 28 minutes is that Scouting should be a discovery that the boys make on their own, avoiding the interference of adults as much as possible. Got it. I don't know anything about Clarke Green. He seems very experienced and has obviously invested a lot in Scouting (his ScoutmasterCG website being only part of it). Many of us are very experienced and we can all learn from each other - I'm fine with that. However, I do tire of the attitude that true Scouting is only experienced by the few who have that secret decoder ring to unlock Bill Hillcourt's secrets of boy leadership. We all stand on the shoulders of giants, but Scouting is not that hard. We sometimes make it harder than it needs to be by endlessly reminding others that in spite of best efforts - nope, you're still not doing it right. Dare I say there is some virtue signaling in all this?

    \ Yes I agree 100% with this. I had an instance where I had a Wolf's car just perform miserable and you could see it. I called him and mom over ( in the middle of the race) and said 'lets look at this quickly" we found come hot glue on the bottom of one the wheels. problem fixed

    I think the organization is still going to be the "Boy Scouts of America," as it has been even though there have been girls/young women as youth members in one of its programs for the past 45 years. I also think that the program, "Boy Scouts," is still going to have that name even if National pulls a switcheroo and allows girls in Boy Scout troops. I'm willing to bet one person $1 on this. (My standard betting limit.)

    Agree....besides, I've always thought "youth" represent more boys than girls, even though the term is considered genderless. I suppose I keep hearing in my head John Pesci saying "the two yoots" when referring to two 18-20 year old boys

    OA Troop Representative is a youth position. ASM is the only adult position open to 18 year olds and what their function is is at the discretion of the SM. Why not have him advise the youth OATR?

    This very well describes how our troop operates. Our troop has an annual planning/calendaring meeting led by the SPL. We are a small troop, so everyone gets to vote. The boys choose our camping destinations with the understanding that dates may shift around based on the availability of campsite reservations. Adult leaders are the ones who take that information and go make the actual campsite reservations. If changes are needed, the boys vote again on a new plan (example: this year the boys voted for snow camping but unfortunately there was no snow). For campouts, the boys always do their own meal planning, equipment assignments, tent assignments, etc. Adult leaders on the campout cook, eat, and tent separately. Under direction of the PL or SPL, the boys also vote on the activities for weekly meetings. Sometimes the agenda is preset (i.e. we will always hold a campout planning meeting right before a weekend campout). Sometimes the boys have voted to work on rank advancement, sometimes to have a merit badge class, sometimes to help with a service project, sometimes to have a game night - there is a lot of variety. Boy leadership should have its limits. On a recent troop hike, our SPL was leading a group of boys in front who were sprinting to the finish. We were getting spread out too far apart on the trail, so I asked him to return and rejoin the rest of the group. It was a safety issue of potentially getting separated and lost. The SPL became indignant, saying "so much for boy leadership". Sometimes adults know best - such is life. I give our troop a "B" grade for boy leadership. We are somewhat hobbled because our troop leadership is quite young (13 year old SPL). Our older Scouts rarely show up or put any real effort into leadership assignments, so it falls to the younger Scouts who have the enthusiasm and commitment. We are doing ok, but I recognize there are definitely things we could do better. It is an evolution, and I can see improvements in our boy leadership over time.
