I don't normally believe in making up knots but I have several girls in my Crew that have or will be receiving the Gold Scout Gold Award. I asked if they would like a square knot to wear on their Venturing uniform and the answer was yes.

Taking the colors from the Gold Award badge, the knot would be light blue and gold with a gold border on a Venturing green background.

I'm interested in your thoughts; please let me hear from you.

Just wondering whether it's more common for a Venturing crew to specialize in a certain kind of activity, or whether it's more common for them to do a smattering of whatever floats their boats...

	Any thoughts?

Help! Our local scout units have difficulty working together and the kids are being caught in the middle. I have been running the local Venture Crew for 13 years now. Over the years we have had mixed relations with the local Boy Troop, wonderful relations with the local Girl Troop, and have actively started building more with the local Pack. Our Boy Troop Scoutmaster actively slanders our unit to the kids in the Troop at every opportunity, attempts to schedule events with us and then cancels them the week of and spreads false information about the event, other times he actively schedules troop events the same time as ours to force the kids to choose, harasses our youth members when they wear their green Venturing shirts to activities or meetings, withholds advancement from them for weeks to get the non-dual registered scouts through before they do, and various other things. How is this proper conduct for a scoutmaster and his assistants?

The Charter Organization Representative for the Troop had the Crew's charter cancelled at the church we at in 2010 (which forced us to find a new charter group) so speaking to him is not really an option. Our Council has previously turned a blind eye to the conduct that this Troop and their Scoutmaster has shown to scouts and other units. What do we do?

We recently just started a crew and I have a scout that started her Eagle scout project with her troop. She is no longer comfortable in her troop as things have gone array and the mixture between the charters girl and boy troop are so mingled she said that they are officially known as the "hook up troop". I don't have much to say about that, but she asked me if it was a possibility to move her Eagle project over to our Venturing Crew.

We are in a neighboring council. Is this something that is doable? What are the steps to be done? Does she need to start over?

Any help, links, advice would be appreciated!

Should co-ed Venturing Crews be folded into Scouts BSA as Venturing “Patrols”? My posting last week sought ideas to upgrade prospects of “stand-alone” Venturing attracted little interest except for some good comments focused on diagnosing the problems. This is not a surprise, as membership numbers and program support structures have plummeted or entirely disappeared in many councils. For purposes of this posting we will assume that Venturing is no longer sufficiently numerous to continue as the current “stand alone” program. Assuming non-viability is the case (even if you disagree with the assumption): What do you think should be done with Venturing? It occurs to me that the principal options include:

	1. Terminate Venturing entirely and focus financial and leadership resources elsewhere.

	2. Convert Venturing to an optional program like STEM Scouts. Allow the remaining Venturing Crews to continue, but reallocate council resources elsewhere.

	3. Convert Venturing “Crews” into Scouts BSA “Patrols” attached to a Scouts BSA Troop.

	4. Spin-off Venturing into the non-BSA “Learning for Life” entity and allow them to function under the support structure for Exploring.

	5. Continue as-is and see what happens.

My personal leaning is that Venturing can best be positioned as a “Patrol” attached to a Scouts BSA Troop. There are a number of interesting program and operational issues that would need to be considered, but I think it is doable. Converting Venturing into a council-optional program or folding it into Exploring might be a formula for a continued slide into oblivion, but perhaps there are advantages to those approaches I am not aware of.

What say you? I think this is an issue that will be dealt with within a year or so. I have simultaneously posted a different thread asking what factors keep Sea Scouts and Law Enforcement Exploring functioning well. If there are lessons to be learned from those programs that can be applied to Venturing, please use that posting to share your thoughts.

What Keeps Sea Scouts and Law Enforcement Exploring Running So Well? COVID, the bankruptcy, and other operational and program deformations have severely impacted Venturing, but Sea Scouts and Law Enforcement Exploring seem to just continue on with sufficient numbers of young adult and adult members. There is not much in the way of needed BSA professional time or financial investment. What are the factors about these teen-focused programs that have quietly kept them operating for decades?

Venturing enrollment has decreased significantly during the course of recent BSA challenges. This thread will focus on: What could or should be done now to increase the membership and prospects of the Venturing program as in independent BSA program unit? Feel free to comment on both administrative and programmatic elements of Venturing, including its advancement program. Please focus only on Venturing and not Sea Scouts or Exploring. Next week I will post a thread asking for suggestions on how Venturing might be structured as part of Scouts BSA – so please defer that discussion until then.

Good gosh, read this young women’s bio. Eagle Scout, Gold Award, Debate Team.....and more. I don’t know what Scouting is going to look like on the other side of the BK but I so hope that it will be able to thrive so that kids can experience everything from troop camp outs to the heights of leadership opportunities.

Now that our council has expanded our VOA cabinet is relying on phone conferences. Each youth officer is more than an hour away from the others.

We tried video but that had a host of problems. (Didn't work for everybody, sometimes not for anybody. When it did work didn't help the discussion advance much.)

Except for 15 minutes of fumbling because the wrong # was circulated, our first phone conference of the year seemed to go well, and I'm looking forward to hearing our VOA President improve as the year goes forward.

Besides making sure everyone has the right number , Does anyone have tips/tricks for managing phone conferences?

After 10 yrs of GS, I have just started a Venturing Crew and couldn't be happier. Have an amazing CO!

Just had our first recruitment event, which was more about being visible to the CO parish and making connects then actual recruitment. Trying to learn as much as I can about the rules and our program, but I'd love to hear from Crews and their tips for newbies!

What was the first trip you went on?

I found this news story about starting a Ship, please add posts regarding starting a Ship.

Eagle Scout Bill Murphey has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America since the 1970s...Growing up on the Jersey Shore, Murphey has also put in more than 40 years on the water, sailing and racing on the Barnegat Bay. He always wondered why there had never been a Sea Scouts chapter established on the South Jersey shore.

Recently, Murphey found a prophesy in a box of his grandfather’s memorabilia, where he discovered photos of his great uncle, John Wood, a sea scout in North Jersey. The photographs were of a cruise Wood took with Sea Scout Ship 117 in the year 1914. Coincidentally, Murphey’s junior sailing group at the Barnegat Bay Yacht Club is group 117. So, when Capt. Pat Geiger reached out to recruit him to a Sea Scouts ship in Little Egg Harbor, Murphey climbed aboard with enthusiasm, suggesting they take on the augural ship number.

“I thought, someone’s going to lead this ship, and it might as well be me,” Murphey chuckled. Just like that, he became skipper of Sea Scout Ship 117, which comprises about a dozen male and female scouts and, according to Geiger, will be chartered by the West Creek Volunteer Fire Co.

Geiger stated that Eagle Scouts Todd and Paul Lund had done most of the work, and were already holding meetings before recruiting any adults. “Pretty impressive for our local Eagle Scouts,” Geiger praised. The scouts elected Geiger as their executive officer, Todd Lund Sr. as committee chairman, Virginia Lund as treasurer, and named several mates including Lou Foster and Capt. Robert Meseck.

	P.S.

According to First Mate Foster, the ship is responsible for organizing and executing a long cruise. Their first goal is a 14-mile cruise to Atlantic City on Independence Day. If they achieve this goal, they will sail out to Atlantic City, tie up to watch the fireworks, and sail back. Murphey said he expects overnight trips by this August.
