First time posting about a specific trip we've taken, but this one is worth mentioning in case anyone in the area is looking for ideas. We're Central/North NJ, so it was a 6.5 hour drive for us (not including stopping for gas and food), but well worth it.

We stayed at Mount Norris Scout Reservation in Eden, VT. The camp director, Eric Bouchard, was down sick, but still repaired a door in their trading post so we could change our reservation and add people to our trip. When we arrived late Friday night to 5 degrees F, he had the lights on and the heat up and the parking lot freshly plowed. The scouts spent quite a bit of time just playing in the snow in the field near the dining hall. https://www.scoutingvermont.org/mtnorris.html

Saturday we drove to Catamount Outdoor Family Center, in Williston. It's about an hour from the camp, but again, worth it. They rent cross-country skis, snowshoes and a limited number of fat bikes, and have a sledding hill. Due to thawing and refreezing prior to our visit, the scouts weren't able to ski or sled, but we did bike and snowshoe. For biking, there are sections of trail that are manageable for anyone who is a decent biker, but there are also some very technical sections. The four of us who biked all have mountain biking experience, so we did hit some of the more difficult sections and it was a blast! Catamount offers group rates and day passes, along with seasonal. They had a nice fire going in the field outside the office and rental building. Our scouts on snowshoes took out the trail stoves and cooked at the 'Cliffs of Insanity'. https://catamountoutdoor.org/

Sunday, just a ten-minute drive from camp, we visited Eden Ethical Dogsledding. I can't even tell you how much fun this was. The kids enjoyed the sledding, but it was the time spent with the dogs that was the biggest hit. If you've never walked into a house and been surrounded by twenty dogs, you're missing out on a wonderful experience. The scouts just hung out with the dogs, eating popcorn and warm cookies, for about 40 minutes. They then helped put harnesses on the dogs, hook them to the traces on the sleds, and afterward un-harness and feed the dogs treats. Jim and his staff had hot chocolate waiting for us afterward, and in an unexpected twist, brought out the Arctic Cat to rescue one parent who got turned around (lost-ish) and ended up in a ditch. All around top-notch visit. https://www.edendogsledding.com/

All three (Camp, Catamount, Eden Ethical) are open year-round.

Scouts from Troops 448 (Boys)/4448 (Girls), in Salisbury, recently returned from a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail near Burkes Garden, Virginia, where seven Scouts and five adults challenged themselves hiking along Garden Mountain. The weekend-long adventure combined outdoor skills, conservation service and personal growth in one of the most remote valleys in the eastern United States.

Scoutmaster Dr. Prachee Jain indicated that the hike adds another section to Troop 448’s long-term goal of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail.

“The troop began this journey back in the 2003 and over the years, our Scouts have completed roughly 140 continuous miles from Springer Mountain Georgia into North Carolina and numerous additional sections in N.C. and Virginia,” Jain said. “Each trip brings us closer to that goal while building memories.”

	Hi,

My name is Brennan Anderson, an Eagle Scout out of Rhode Island, and I am working with a team for my senior high school capstone project to design a manufacturable solution to help control and prevent campfire incidents. If you have time, please consider filling out this survey. It should take less than 2 minutes. Any response would be greatly appreciated!

We decided to add dining flies to our camping gear, partially as a team building exercise, partially as a Scout skill exercise, but mostly to help build patrol identities and provide shelter. I used the instructions found here: https://troop279.us/patrol-dining-fly/

My wife and son helped hold the poles while I tied the knots for the adult fly so I could do a test set up. Poles need straightened and we need to get hammers for the troop, but otherwise, it looks like it will work.

Pine Tree Council had a board vote Thursday night to sell the 75-year-old Camp Bomazeen in Belgrade, Maine .

Pine Tree Council had earlier formed an emergency task force to address its financial problems but the task force concluded that unless the camp is sold, council would be out of money in a matter of months. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has decimated the council’s ability to raise money for Scouting activities, officials said.

Matt Klutzaritz, Scout executive and CEO of the Raymond-based Pine Tree Council, said it was a difficult decision and they understand the move will make some loyal Camp Bomazeeners upset. But it’s necessary to keep the organization, and Scouting, going in the council’s region of the state, he said.
