  2. She thinks that way because she didn’t have a scouting experience as a youth. Patrol method is only limited by adults fears. I used to teach a course teaching adults how to push their fears boundaries out. The adults need to ask themselves what it would take to let the patrols to cook on their own. I’m not a fan of no cooking, but some healthy easy to fix meals might help the adults grow in the program. Discussion? Barry
  3. "Alex Reid, from Whitwick, in Leicestershire, achieved the King's Scout Award for outstanding personal achievement. He will be visiting Windsor Castle on Sunday for a celebratory event where he will take part in a St George's Day parade with other winners. Mr Reid, who leads Whitwick Scouts, said: "It has not hit me yet." ... To achieve the award, for scouts aged between 16 and 25 years old have to complete a range of challenges including service to their community, an expedition in wild country, and a five-day residential project." 5. Adults are the worst enemy to patrol method. We apply our sensibilities and biases to a process that the youth see no issue with. Last campout we had 5 patrols. 1 patrol was two scouts. 1 patrol was four scouts. They had a great time, they cooked and enjoyed their meals and were happy to have only their own dishes to contend with. I subscribe completely the B-P's POV: "The patrol system is not one method in which Scouting can be carried on. It is the only method." There is another tenant of B-P I fully subscribe to: "My ideal camp is where everyone is cheery and busy, whe

  7. From my reading, I believe that Agnes, BP's sister, was asked, or perhaps assigned, the role of developing a girl group after BP met with a large group of girls at the first International gathering in London. According to the report, the girls told him to his face that girls could and should be scouts, and they made their own group. Eventually, Lady BP of course took over the program more or less as Agnes never really enjoyed it particularly. I continue to find that tale amusing, as most of us may have met a few focused and determined young women.

  9. It appears the GSUSA allows political involvement for their capstone award projects whereas the BSA does not. I doubt my Council Eagle Board would approve this for an Eagle Scout project. Will that change in the BSA? IMHO, I hope not as we have enough dividing us. That said, I agree with her that school/local book censorship is rather pointless when internet access is available. My $0.02,

  11. Not charging $230 a year might go a long way to improving their demographics...
  12. Like Skeptic, all this attention to gender in BSA scouting made me curious about what gender-segregated scouting in Sweden used to be like. Even the words for gender segregated scouting sound antiquated and sepia-toned. It's hard to imagine. But apparently someone wrote a thesis on it recently, and so Scouterna has an information page on it. Since there's a language barrier for all other WOSM NSOs other than Scouts UK, I thought I'd post a translation. "Scout magazine MARCH 8, 2022 When the girls took up scouting That others than boys would be allowed to be part of the Scouts wa

  14. So, while I have stated numerous times that I have no issue with the proven or even likely cases that occurred. But, the context of this discussion continues to rely on mostly unsubstantiated numbers and the theory that the worst proven or validated occurrences are the norm. Yet, as far as we know, most have never gotten beyond the finger pointing. Just as McMartin was surely not the norm for such things, it also ruined a lot of lives with little or no verification. And that has been verified. The real problem I see is that emotion, empathy, and broad brush accusations tend to take the fr
  15. No, I do not expect apologies from parasites, I expect an apology from a scout who called a large number of other scouts liars based upon unfounded accusations. (That would be YOU.)
  16. Where do you get your information? Are you part of the settlement trust? When you say "many cannot", how many are you saying, what is the percentage? Have you read the claims? Except for what you have read do you know the lawyers? Do you actually even know a claimant? Have you walked in any of our shoes? As a survivor who was well vetted by a law firm who has filed 1600 claims I am disturbed by your constant attitude of trying to make the BSA look like the victim in all of this. It was the BSA who filed the Bankruptcy and ran their own ads for survivors to come forward. I know this becaus
  17. "But we do know that one basic prerequisite here is proving one's "connection to scouting". Yes, and many cannot, yet they're still count as "someone" that filed a claim. The lawyers certainly have done little real vetting, that has been noted already. And, if that "real" connection and an actual abuse incident is whown, they are due recompense. Are you expecting apologies from the name collectors and legal manipulators for all the verified false claims?
  18. Great point! Scouting is inversely proportional to "school like activities". The more scouting becomes like school, the fewer scouts we will have.
  19. But we do know that one basic prerequisite here is proving one's "connection to scouting" via one's name being on a troop roster at the time of being assaulted, or by other documentation, such as the Troop Scribe's report in the local newspaper for those who were scouts in towns small enough to print the scribe reports in the paper. As non-scouts are easily excluded, the statement above calls fellow scouts liars. I find this behavior that requires an apology. In this context, there are some lines that one cannot cross.
  20. I'm surprised we don't hear about more issues with the YMCA. Perhaps my BSA training has made me hypersensitive to compromising situations. When taking my son to swim lessons, I skip the family changing area and opt for the men's room where they still have a dedicated wing for parents of young children. The locker room is partitioned for privacy (seriously, it's like a maze), but that also would make it difficult for a staff member or well-meaning bystander to intervene if they saw inappropriate activities. We always try to get in and out as fast as possible (you can shower at home, kid).
  21. It looks like this ill-fated program was rolled-out during my 15-year Scouting hiatus between the time I worked at my local council camp in college and when my son was old enough to join Cub Scouts. I'm guessing the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis put an emphasis on marketable degrees and the BSA (already suffering from membership declines), tried to prop themselves up by attaching themselves to the STEM movement? And people actually voted to turn Scouts into night school? 😂
  22. When my financial advisor found out I was a scout leader and taking other people's kids in my car and out camping, he recommended I carry umbrella liability insurance. I have done so for 30 years now. It is very reasonable in cost. You can be perfectly innocent and not at fault, but if you get sued or accused, it can cost you everything to defend yourself. Such is today's litigious society that feels if my kid gets hurt, SOMEONE has to pay, no matter the reason.
  23. @fred8033, one of the first Google hits I came across suggested that Girl Scout membership declined from 2.8 million in 2003 to ~1 million in 2021. This would be a point-to point decrease of ~65% over an 18-year span. According to a table I pulled from Wikipedia, BSA membership went from 3.2 million in 2003 to ~1 million in 2021. This would be a point-to point decrease of ~69% over the same period. While some of the BSA's issues have been self-inflicted, I do think the membership challenges are part of a larger societal trend - kids just have a lot more choices these days (and that's
  24. @jumpingjoj, I'm not too familiar with the bankruptcy process. How exactly did a scout leader get roped into this? Aside from someone getting physically hurt under my charge, this is pretty much my worst nightmare as a scout volunteer. Unless the accused wanted to lawyer-up to clear their name (with a limited success rate and drawing more attention to themselves in the process), their efforts may be better spent elsewhere. We're only given so much time on this Earth - why spend it on an organization that would turn on them so quickly?
  25. That was the version when I was a Cub. I think this one was another national one for awhile. Cub Scout Progress Towards Ranks, Tiger Cub Belt Totem (boyscouttrail.com)
  26. This was the BSA version I am familiar with.

So, in my unit - Patrols cook.  Patrol Leaders have the perogative to team up with other patrols if they feel their patrol attendance is too low to justify standing alone.  That is a Patrol Leader decision - not an adult decision.  But if the Eagle Patrol leader decides with only 2 people coming to the next campout they would like to partner with the Owl Patrol who has 4 - to make 6 total - the entire Eagle Patrol teams up with the entire Owl Patrol in partnership for cooking and KP and activities. We once did this thing where adults would decide something like "With 16 scouts going, we should split into two patrols."  This was misguided. This is leadership, problem solving, negotiating opportunities lost if adults get in the mix.
