Proper numeral/ trained patch color?

Recommended Posts

First off let me say that I do not mean to imply, convey, or show any negativity to the spun post comment about the proper den numerals or trained strip color. I was specifically looking for a source for this info and other than the comment in my post, I cannot find it anywhere.

Now , let me explain: I install garage doors. I have 15 years of experience and I am factory trained and certified in garage door. Without implying any bragging, I am the best at my company.

Seriously, It's what I do and somehow, I just happen to be the best.

But as far as you know, I could be a 14 year old girl who never actually saw a garage door ever in my life.

So my point is, even with my 15 years experience, I would not be upset or offended if you believed the guy who has been selling garage doors at Home Depot for 3 weeks now over anything I say.

Why? Because you do know for a fact that he works at Home Depot, AND he works in the garage door dept.

Me? Well, all you have is my word. Could be I might have "kinda" helped a friend once put an opener on his door.

So anyways, just to satisfy my need to be sure, I tried to look up ( through our councils website and through scouting.org) any listing or color requiremenst for Cub Scout leader patch color requirements .

So far I found zilch, nada, nil, zip!

All I can find is the standard uniform inspection sheet that shows placement. The only color listing is the shirt color, pants, socks and epillettes. Nothing about den or trained color.

When I bought my shirt last year, the woman at the scout shop said tht since it is a centenial shirt, it was green and tan numbers and trained strip. I told her I was a Cub Leader, not Boy Scout. She said same thing.

I have the new centenial **** y with blue epilletts, cub leader patch( soon to be Webelos leader) G & T numbers and G&T trained patch.

My son will be getting his tan shirt in a few weeks anf I want to make sure zi get the right colors for him AND make sure I correct my colors if need be.

So. Can anybody point me to a source?

Thanks, Mark

Same storey from my councils scout shop AND from the National Scout shop one council over.

Color of the num, erals and trained strip depends on the shirt worn not the type of unit...

epaulets denote your unit type not patch colors...

And every person in both shops agreed. I'll trust the folks in gold epaulets that I spoke to in person!

Hate to say it, but you are both wrong, red numbers are worn for Webelos in the CU, CS leaders, Venturers and venturing Leaders. Understandable that folks still have the wrong info since A) national released the Insignia Guide for the CUs 9 months AFTER the CUs came out and B) Some literature still has the wrong info.

here are my sources and they are correct since I am one of the UPs giving national an earful since they released the red tan strips and the new Insignia Guide a week after I bought and sewed on my green numbers and trained strip. national has updated them as I have complained. ;)

http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/Male_Leader_Scout.pdf Has the correct unit numbers listed by the correct Item #

http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/Male_Leader_Checklsit.pdf

states the correct item numbers and "Red Trained Emblem (Cub Scout Leaders)" and "Unit Numerals red (Cub Scout leaders, list your unit number on the order form.): 0 (00), 1 (01), 2(02), 3 (03), 4 (04), 5 (05), 6 (06), 7 (07), 8 (08), 9 (06) invert"

In reference to Webelos wearing the red, here are the links

"Unit Numerals red } http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/Webelos_Checklist.pdf

Also not trying to sound harsh or snarky or whatever. I think the unit number color change for Boy Scouts is the most idiotic thing since it is causing a heck of a lot of confusions, especially since national did put out 9 months of incorrect info out there.

Good news is that #1 you are not alone in wearing the wrong colors #2 national did say at one time that CS leaders Could wear the tan and greens, got a copy of that pdf somewhere plus that is what they told every one for 9 mopnths ( also got the pdf with national saying the CS leaders would wear red on tan numbers, but htta is a different story), and #3 national did say that elements of the ODL uniform are interchangable with the CUs, so Scouts and Boy Scout Leaders could still wear red numbers and loops on the CUs

Great big screw up dontcha think?

Ok a little more ranting. As you can guess this issue ticks me off to no end.

The numbers issue casued headaches in my pack. parents upset since they went out and got the greet numbers, as they were told, only to discover a few months later that the info they received was wrong and they need red numbers. leaders upset because they also were told green numbers AND received the green trained strips, remember national collected all the old red and tan ones so they were not available, and now were told they need to buy the new, smaller red and tan trained strips.

Long story short, my pack decided not to worry about it. If you are wearing green and tan, keep them. wearing red keep them BUT I can tell you that this screw up from national has discouraged some parents and leaders from buying uniforms. there are DLs who will not buy a uniform until things settle down with national, i.e. they now have a "female cut" uniform. Hopefully some of these leaders will get uniforms finally.

I wouldn't worry about it. I just watched the new CM Fast Start, and the CM in the video had onthe red and white numbers with a.... tan and green trained strip.

If national can't get things correct, how the heck are we suppose to know?

Gosh Eagle92...... I kinda get the feeling you might possibly, maybe sorta be upset? LOL!

Okay, I have a hard time beleiving that National can get something wrong! The Tiger Cub with the Bobcat, Tiger, Wolf and Bear rank badges even specifically said National doesn't make mistakes! :)

So tan and green is okay? Well, I'm gonna switch to red and white. Maybe it's no big deal, but I want it to be right - even if for my own satisfaction. Kinda sets a great example for the kids too. Can't realluy say much about their shirts not tucked in if I'm the odball with the wrong color patches can I?

Anyway, I appreciate the info...Thanks!

Mark

well now I know why both stores told me that, I guess this falls under the once uniform, always uniform rule. When I did update my Cub Uni the smaller trained strips were not out, lending more weight to their statement.

In all honesty, if the adults have the numbers, and on the right sleeve I consider myself ahead of the game. There is an insignia guide on the tag in the shirt, we give them a flyer with what to buy that has the insignia guide also and our Scout Shop makes a point of showing people who seem new where things go. I mean c'mon when I have a Pack committee member who someone ended up with a district committee patch that he wears on the right chest and the year rocker from the annual cubmobile under the flag well, three numerals of the same color in the right order is AWESOME! We have also seen people with an upside down 5, because they had no 2's and one person had 2 red and a green digit for the same reason!

So obviously I do not need National making things harder by confusin all of us :)

'Fish,

Just a tad. part of the reason why it irks is that I use to work supply, and know for a fact there are folks in supply who do know what they are doing, do state things are wrong or will not work, and then get ignored. I remember when the AOL belt buckle came out, and I said it was a ridiculous idea b/c once you get AOL, you are moving into scouts, and you don't want to wear "CS stuff" when the BS option exists. Ditto some of the crazy things that came out in the past in relation to camping gear. Luckily Supply is starting to get their act together in the camping equipment department. Jetboil and MSR Whisperlights at competitive prices, I LOVE IT.

When I took BALOO in Feb, I wanted to make sure I was going to put in the right spot as a temporay patch. I was sure that my right pocket was the right spot, but decided that I might ought to ask a few other leaders where it should go....you know, to confirm it.

Holy Moley! NOw, I am not by any means a member of the UP, but some had their council patches on their right sleeve, the United States flag on or over their right pocket, Adult Leader Position patch on their left pocket and one guy had the flag and pack numbers on both sleeves.

Well, at least he was symetrical ! LOL!

Yep! I waited til I got home and asked on here! :)

Adam and 'Fish,

hear ya about the patches everywhere. You wuld think they would look at their son's book or other literature.

Then again there are discrepancies as shown above.

However my favorite discrepancy is that according to the inspection sheet found here

http://scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/34048.pdf which states that

Temporary insignia, including one current world Scout jamboree

patch, centered on pocket. Only one temporary insignia

may be worn at a time, and they are not required for correct

uniforming. Cub Scout leaders and female leaders wearing

the official uniform shirt or blouse may wear one temporary

insignia centered above the Boy Scouts of America strip. (bold for emphasis)

So a CS leader wearing a temp patch in the jambo spot is cool ;)

Ok, being a newly minted DL, I was disappointed to just drop a bill and a half buying a uniform, sewing on all my patches, then coming here and finding out I bought the wrong numerals!

So, My question is, after reading posts all over here about once its official, its always official, can I keep my tan/green numbers?

I did hand sew them on, and thats no easy task for me.

it shows CS uniform with Green/Tan:

http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/images/pdfs/2008UniformGuide.pdf

now it shows White/Red

I'm,

#1 WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! (caps intentional as I am shouting a greeting at ya ;) )

#2 I wouldn't worry about having the wrong color numbers as national has screwed up this issue so much it's ridiculous. Heck if you look at the 2nd link, the one with the CS leaders in red and white numbers, the CM is wearing a green and tan trained strip, not the small red and tantrained strip he's now suppose to wear.

#3, yep once offical always official. that's how the BSA controls the uniform image and will go after folks legally if they choose to.. SOOOO you have a VINTAGE 2008-2009 CS Leader Uniform. just save those pdfs in case the uniform police come after ya. ;)

Again I wouldn't worry about it. The only reasons why I even changed from my tan and greens to red and whites was A) I will be involved with CS for 9 more years as only oldest is in Cubs and B) I am on the training staff, and C) guilt complex for being "out of uniform" as i'm a member of the Uniform Police ;)

Also I am a cheapskate and look at alternative sources for uniforms, i.e. ebay, thrift stores, etc. you'll be surprised at the shirts, and if you're a patch collector, the patches, you will find. Also saves $.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

Epilletts, shoulder loops, shoulder pads, etc... all the same to me! :p

Basically, I just bought new red and white numbers today so I would match the boys I work with and the other adult leaders who had their shirts before the centenial came out.(This message has been edited by scoutfish)
