Right pocket.

Anyone telling you it goes somewhere else is mistaken.

It most certainly does NOT get worn above the left pocket (that's for the World Crest, a different patch).

Your source for where things go on the uniform is a booklet called "Insignia Guide", which may be purchased at your local scout shop (at your council office). (of course, nothing is stoping you from just browsing thru it to find that answer).

Also, he shouldn't plan on moving it over to his Boy Scout uniform after he crosses over. There is another World Conservation Award he may earn as a Boy Scout and wear on his uniform. It, too, is worn on the right pocket.

If it is sewn on the body of the right pocket any progress toward ranks would cover it up, right? I was thinking about getting a holder that buttons on the right pocket. Is this acceptable and is a small circular one available?

Yes, the progress toward ranks will cover a patch on the rigt pocket, but it's OK to wear both. My boys typically take those devices off outside of pack meetings so they don't get torn off. (Not to veer too far off topic, but make sure your progress toward ranks device is of post-recall manufacture).

The plastic holders you refer to are available in several shapes and sizes, though I've never seen one the size of the World Conservation Award.

When the World Conservation Badge first came out (about 1977), there was alot of confusion over where it was worn, with many Scouts wearing it were the World Crest is now worn. This was probably due to the size of the award, which was about the same size as the World Crest. At that time, the World Crest was a restrict patch and seldom seen except for Scouts who had participated in World Jamborees or were members/former members of the Transatlantic or Fareast Councils. However, it is now clearly stated that it is worn on the right pocket. The instant recognition and compass point patches of the Cub and Webelos program will obscure it, but originally Cubs did not wear temporary patches on their uniforms.

The problem is the confusion on where the World Conservation Award continues to this day, long after they allowed everyone to wear the World Crest. Heck, I recall asking a group of scouts several years back why they were wearing the WCA in the wrong place, and they claimed their scoutmaster told them it went there because he was told that was the 'new location' for it.

I earned the World Conservation Award way back when in its earliest days. My old dark green Leadership Corps shirt still has the patch sewn on above the pocket where the World Crest goes today.

I can't say where we got the idea to put it there. I just know its been there since about 1975 or 1976. That was a long time ago. I can't believe how much that old shirt shrunk just sitting in a closet!
