Hornaday Awards

Recommended Posts

I am a Venturer and I am also a Silver Hornaday Award applicant. I have just finished all of the requirements for the award. I have contacted my council office for more information and so far, no body has been able to help process my applications or review me under the review board due to the council knowing very little of the Hornaday Awards program. I am turning 21 in a couple days and I am worried that I may not receive the award due to my age. Can I be reviewed and passed after I am 21 years old? Is it similar to the Eagle Scout, where an 18 year old may earn the Eagle after age 18 as long as his paperwork is completed before his 18th birthday? Also, approximately, how many Scouts/Venturers earn this award anyways?

Yes, I am registered in a troop. I've been an Assistant Scoutmaster for 3 years (I turn 21 tomorrow) and so, I qualify to earn the Hornaday Award. I've talked to the advancement chairperson and volunteer services in my council and they don't know anything about the Hornaday Awards. I have tried contacting the conservation committee but they haven't responded. Since I am a Venturer and over the age of 18, I cannot earn merit badges. In place of the merit badges, I have to complete the ecology and plants and wildlife portions of the Venturing Ranger Award (Which I have earned and completed those two requirements) and write a research paper on each of the four conservation projects. In all, I have written a 40 page report detailing all of the information on my projects. As of now, there isn't a date set on a board of review panel and I turn 21 tomorrow. Does that mean I am too late to earn the Award because of my age? Or can I still receive my award after I am 21?

Thanks OGE,

I Get my my feathers ruffled when adults don't get heir act together to help a scout. it seemed to me that DDHII did all the right work and called all the right people. I didn't want him to get gigged when he knew how to do his part but the others were confused. I was glad I could help him.
