Committee Chairman Duties
Posted: Saturday, 12/6/2003: 7:13:58 PM quality
Is there any BSA reference material regarding the duties and responsibilities of the committee and of the chairman? I have seen them for the Scout position, such as SPL, Scribe and the like and for Scoutmaster, but not for others

There are two resources:
1) Troop Committee Guidebook, No. 34505
and
2) The Troop Committee Challenge, No. 33643
both of these should be available from your Scout Service Center.

Pat: You might want to talk to your DE, your commissonor or council bookstore

If you are asking for yourself as a new chairperson for a troop committee, then you need to get in touch with your district training person (or visit their website) to get trained. The class you would need is New Leader Essentials and also Leader Specific Training for troop committee. It is good to read the BSA materials (as cited above) but by getting proper training you will find your job much easier and you will deliver a better BSA program to the boys. It really is a lot easier than trying to figure it out all by yourself... and the training people can answer all your questions and put you in touch with many district resources through the monthly Scout Roundtable. If you are not becoming a committee chairman then there are other Leader Specific classes for every position and you will be a big help to your troop to get trained for anything you do.(This message has been edited by KA6BSA)

The responsibilities of the chair will vary with respect to the type of unit you are talking about, Pat5208. This is why BW asked his question. The reason for this is that the responsibilities of the committee as a whole vary with the type of unit. At the cub scout level, the committee essentially runs the programs working with the cubmaster and den leaders. At boy scout troops and other types of units for older youth, the youth themselves take on more responsibility for planning and executing the program, and the roles of the unit leaders and the committees shift accordingly.
