  • At least this is a fun uniform question........(leader question)

I'm not a uniform tzar, really I'm not.

Ok, maybe a little for leaders (set a good example, and all).

My question concerns how far the "once uniform, always uniform" rule of thumb can be taken.

My wife just started to move her pack volunteer work to a more visible position (as in, she is now up front at pack meetings sometimes).

She very much dislikes the green/tan uniform, almost as much as she dislikes the yellow/blue uniform. So.... she has picked up an old "Den Mother's Dress". My guess is that it dates from the 50's.

With proper insignia for her position, just how big of a stretch is this?

The good news is the boys will all think it is funny, fun, and will get a big kick out of it. This is a bonus.

    What are thoughts here?

Not a stretch at all. She should go for it, and be prepared to explain a little bit of scouting history along the way.

I was pleaseed to visit another troop's court of honor and there saw one boy in a uniform from the 50's. I didn't ask if it was grandpa's or a find on E-bay. It looked sharp ant the boy wore it well.

It is an official uniform and if its what she wants certainly wear it.

Have thought of doing something like this myself but its quite difficult to get decent examples of older uniforms in the size i actually wear.

Hey, let's not be sexist here. What about the tartan kilt? If you have the legs to pull it off, more power to ya.

I think it is a great idea. How how to your wife for thinking outside the box.

I don't know. I guess it depends on the size of your wife and the size of the dress? Is that a better attempt at humor?

Academically speaking, I think the underlying question is, if it is proper to wear a den mothers uniform given your wife's current position in the pack? If there were separate uniforms for Cub Masters and Den Leaders, what would the answer be?

Realistically speaking: Cool idea! Go for it!

This would certainly make an interesting Pack Meeting.

              What are patches? Uniform inspection?
Wait - who said something about 2-deep leadership?

Ok, some of the patches are in the wrong place. They are wearing neckerchiefs, so overall, I'm ok with it.

Ok, now this is more of a GSUSA issue. I can't speak for their uniforming standards but overall I would say this is acceptable.

              Egad!!!!

Bretley, I think you now understand the concept of 'unintended consequences'. Even WORSE, right after the first post and before I saw the following ones, I was thinking along the same lines....photos to follow? (jpstodwftexas, don't even think about it)

                ha!

I expected nothing less from this crowd, as I've said I've been a lurker for some time.

Even if not, This sounds like campfire talk after the youth has vacated anyhow.

                actual follow-up post to follow.

First pack meeting was last night, wife's uniform went over better than expected (outside 'one issue', but.......), the boys all thought it was "cool" the other leaders (minus the 'one issue') all applauded her dedication and creativity.

There are plenty of pictures, I haven't gotten any back to me yet, but I'll share them as they come up.

Thanks guys for the kind words, I shared them with her as she was sewing patched on her uniform (even KDD's).

In all seriousness, I think this looks great! What a perfect opportunity to talk about the history of scouting, the role of den mothers, etc. Anything to keep the scouts engaged is a good thing. If your wife is more comfortable in the dress, I say go for it! (Did I mention she looks great?)
