  • Boy Scout dies of self-inflicted gunshot at San Diego scout camp

    http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/loca...265229971.html

"A boy has died after shooting himself in the head Monday at a Boy Scout camp in San Diego, officials confirmed.

San Diego police were called to a suicide attempt at the Fiesta Island Youth Camp and Youth Aquatic Center in Mission Bay at 7:35 a.m., Lt. Mike Hastings said.

Officers were able to get the gun away from the 12-year-old scout but by then it was too late, Hastings said.

Paramedics tried to revive the child, but he was pronounced dead at the campsite, according to a spokesperson for San Diego Fire Rescue.

Investigators have blocked off the camp entrance and are interviewing scouts and leaders, including the child's father, who was present at the camp."

What a sad day for all.

No firearms activity at this camp, apparently someone brought a firearm to camp.

      Not 11. 12-year-old child
Not shot in the head. Latest police report is that fatal shot was to torso.
Not a Boy Scout camp but Boy Scouts camping at a city park..
Not officially ruled a suicide at this point.

Adjacent to the Youth Aquatic Center (YAC) is the Fiesta Island Youth Camp (CFI), which is owned and operated by the City of San Diego.

The day got worse with another fatality on a scout rafting trip on the Salmon River in Idaho. Father and son were ejected from their raft at the river section known as the Slide. The father, a Seattle Fire Lieutenant, drowned.

We all must be diligent in our training, planning, and leadership; and always be prepared. Although there will be freak scenarios that we cant foresee, prevent, or counter, we must always do all we can to truly be prepared.

These losses are horrible, but they should also be a reminder of our responsibility as program participants, and leaders. I don't know that anything could have been done to prevent these deaths, but we must always be prepared.

            Update:
The deadly shooting of a 12-year-old Boy Scout at a summer camp in San Diego appeared at first to be self-inflicted, but now investigators are interviewing witnesses and examining forensic evidence to determine the cause of death.

"Police believe the handgun found at the scene will be traced to Las Vegas and that the boy brought the gun to camp himself, according to a statement from SDPD. Police also said the gun was unregistered.

                http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/ca...tml?akmobile=o

San Diego,CA police are unable to determine if gunshot(s) was intentional or accidental, but believe scout got the unregistered gun in Las Vegas and brought it to San Diego summer camp. Scout was then shot inside his tent while camping on Fiesta Island Monday, June 30.

"San Diego police say another boy was in the tent and a third boy was outside when the shooting happened.

The investigation has now been handed over to the Las Vegas Police Department."

Clark County, Nevada which includes Las Vegas requires handgun registration.

Not very effective handgun registration apparently.

Anybody else note that as soon as this sad event became pretty much a non Scout "blame game" the media dropped it? Does not surprise me, but certainly shows again their bias. At least that is how I see it.

Interesting as LVPD has no jurisdiction over the shooting itself. Over possible illegal sale of a firearm? Sure. But not the homicide or suicide.

In what way did the media drop this story in a biased manner? The first reporting on it was on June 30 with additional reporting on the initial story at least through July 2. There was an additional follow-up story by local media on July 26. The San Diego police haven't been able to determine if it was accidental or intentional but given that they've pretty much ended their investigation, they likely believe it was self-inflicted.

It's really unlikely that there will be anything more coming from the Las Vegas PD - unless their investigation uncovers some kind of massive ring of unlawful sales to middle school students, they'll likely not say anything if they find out the gun was taken from a relatives home - and if they do, it'll be a quick blurb in their logs that the local media may or may not pick up on. Now that the investigation is centered in Las Vegas, the San Diego media is likely to move on to other stories.

As to the national media attention, there are always local stories that would usually have remained local except for the 24 hours news cycle and the intertubes. When local stories do make it out beyond their natural borders, it's usually because there is some kind of keyword hook. The Boy Scouts is an automatic keyword hit. Veterans and Flags is another. On a national level, these local stories tend never to be followed up on - ADD in grade school boys is a minor blip compared to the ADD in the media - I don't think they're dropping the story because of an agenda - they dropped it because they got distracted by newer and shinier things.
