  • Chicago Boy Scouts Sell "Elephant Common Stock"

    Found this on UK EBAY

    June 27, 1924
After the Death of "Duchess" the well known Elephant in Lincoln Park Zoo the Boy Scouts pledged themselves to furnish the park with a new elephant by selling shares of the elephant at 50 cents per share.

Wonder what happened to the Elephant?

That elephant, who was named Deed-a-Day, died in 1942. Sadly, an autopsy found that she swallowed glass from a broken whiskey bottle that a zoo visitor threw in her enclosure.

Not a great history of animal care at Lincoln Park Zoo from a Tribune 2009 news article
