Save CT Rivers Council Camp Tadma!

All, I'm trying to get the word out - please help us save one of the oldest Cub Scout Camps in the Country. Read below, write letters to the CT Rivers Council: http://www.ctrivers.org, attend the 3 meetings this and next week, show your support for Cub Scout camping in CT! Thanks. Dave.

 

The CT Rivers Council commissioned a consulting firm to develop a Long Range Plan (LRP) for the Councils camps. The LRP can be found at http://www.SaveTadma.org. This document sets in motion a plan to mothball Tadma, leading eventually to its closure. The decision to mothball the Camp could come as soon as after the 2010 Summer Camp Season.

 

But, We Can Stop This Plan!! Tadma Needs more boys in camp every year to stay successful! Activities like holding Pack Campouts at Tadma help as do non-scout groups renting the camp for outings, meetings, and retreats.

 

This is OUR CAMP we need to help make it successful by Going to Camp!

If they can get kids to attend the camp there will be no need at all to moth ball or sell the camp. If half the people who rally to "save" a camp took three units to do camp presentations for, then your attendance issues would disappear. Why would any council want to keep a property that no one uses?

Not quite a circumstance where no one is attending. 450+ Cubs in resident camp at Tadma last year over a 4 week "season" Plus about another 300 in day camp. This is one of the original 5 Cub Scout specific camps in the country. The push is to promote and get cubs to the camp. It is with a heavy heart that I report Connecticut Rivers Council has a proposal before the Executive Board to close and sell Camp Tadma Again! We're gathering testimony to present to the board on September 17th to prevent this from happening, and I just wanted to reach out to you and my other contacts to gather as much support as we can.

[h=1]Council to divest Camp Tadma, Invest in Active Camps[/h] On September 23, the Executive Board of the Connecticut Rivers Council voted to sell the Mark Greer scout reservation in Bozrah. The proceeds of the sale will be reinvested in the Council’s active camps for the benefit of scouts across the state of Connecticut.

This decision was made based on the recommendation of the Camp Tadma Property Review committee. This committee, consisting of volunteers from the board and assisted by professional realtors and real estate assessors completed their task of reviewing the options of retaining or selling all or part of this camp property.

The committee recommendation was to invest in future Scouts by maintaining and developing our active Scout camps and to use the proceeds of the sale of Camp Tadma as the catalyst for this investment.

Before coming to that recommendation the committee considered a variety of options including the sale of part of the camp to fund the maintenance and improvements needed at the camp and the sale of conservation easements. Based on the information gathered and considered by the committee none of these options were feasible.

The Executive Board reviewed the report and acted based on the needs of the Scouts in the council. Key to the Board’s deliberations was the need to continue to incorporate new programs and maintain our active summer camps as well as the feedback expressed by our membership during the two prior feedback periods.

We are fortunate to have had the use of Camp Tadma for so many years. We are confident that the investments we plan to make in our active camps will enable us to provide those memories for scouts for years to come.
