That Are Music To A Scouter’s Ear

I like music. I like to sing Scouting songs. Music to makes the mornings brighter, the
days happier, the nights more restful. But, no music in my life of Scouting is sweeter
than the memorable comments made by others while going about the Scouting life. Here are a
few of my precious memories.
"I'll be right over."
Reply of the Pack membership chairman when I telephoned in response to a school handout
and asked if she needed den leaders. (We've been good friends ever since.)
"Thanks for everything. I'm a Girl Scout leader so I
know how much work it took to make this so nice."
Spoken by a Webelos parent when I was the Blue and Gold Banquet Chairman.
"Of course I'll help with Day Camp!"
Reply of a Scout mom, when asked by the Cubmaster for her assistance.
"Can I go everyday?"
Next sentence spoken by same Scout mom.
"This district review chairman was tough! I was
ready to intervene if it got to be too much for him, but Jim handled all of his questions
just fine."
Comment from the Scoutmaster representative after my youngest son's eagle board of
review.
"When the Scout Law is sung it reminds me of you.
Thanks Dad."
My 16 year old son’s acknowledgement of his father during his speech at his eagle
court of honor.
"To Dad, The Wind Beneath Our Wings."
Engraved on an Eagle clock my sons gave their father the day of the youngest boy's
Eagle COH.
"I probably won't make it to Eagle. By the time I'm
ready, Mom will be too old to drive me where I need to go."
Spoken by my 11 year old son at his brother's Eagle Court of Honor. (I
was 40 yrs old)
"You watched me grow for the past few years. Now you
can watch this tree grow, instead."
Words of Jeff, a 6'3" Eagle Scout who gave us a red-bud tree for our back yard at
his Eagle Court of Honor.
"I DID it!"
A cub scout who had tried several times before to hammer a nail without bending it.
"Cool!"
On the card accompanying the flowers my son gave me at his Eagle COH. (He had told me
he thought it would be cool if he could get me and my sisters to all cry at the same time
that day.)
"Can I join? Can I?"
My oldest son, age 6, when we read the school handout about cub scouts.
"There is nothing better than this."
Comment of that same son, while sitting around the embers of a campfire with his troop
on a family campout and looking at the stars overhead.
"You reached the mountain top. I'll see you there
soon. And, thanks for being my brother."
Words of a Tenderfoot Scout at his brother's Eagle Court of Honor.
"Andy was surprised to hear you had a job other than
Scouting."
Words of the Father of a Webelos Scout after the Webelos leader, had
discussed his computer occupation with the den the night before.
"Everyone is fine. Will you please tell the rest of
the parents?"
Spoken by a Scoutmaster to his wife (me) during a phone call after a severe
thunderstorm had blown through Scout camp.
