Washington, DC, May 31,
2000 - The National Paint and Coatings Association (NPCA) has announced the
9 winners of its 2000 "Picture it Painted" awards, including a Girl Scout

Lake Rickabear and Camp Te Ata Clean Up Days
Kinnelon, New Jersey and Harriman State Park, New York
More than 15,000 girls and adults are members of the Lenni-Lenape Girl Scout Council.
This council manages several popular camp facilities, including Lake Rickabear, a 332-acre
program center in Kinnelon, NJ. Lake Rickabear is the site of camping, day camp, picnics
and environmental programs for schools, and hosts almost 30,000 visitors a year. The
council also runs Camp Te Ata, an 80-acre program center located in Harriman State Park in
New York., which offers camping throughout the year, including summer camp. Paint donated
by Picture it Painted is being used for the Clean Up Days program, which is bringing
together 150 volunteers to clean up cabins and a lodge at Lake Rickabear, and sleeping
cabins at Camp Te Ata. This effort benefits a large number of children and adults in
northern New Jersey who enjoy these camp facilities.
Program Has Existed for More than 20 Years
For more than 20 years, NPCA's Picture it Painted program has facilitated paint donations,
arranged for supplies, and brought together volunteers to renew and refresh sites
including shelters, homes of low-income and disabled residents, schools, parks, hospitals,
recreational facilities and historic buildings, among others. In 2000, more than 200
applications were received, and 9 outstanding projects were selected, each demonstrating a
unique and lasting ability to make a positive impact on the surrounding community and its
residents.
Additional
projects being honored with Picture it Painted awards include:
- Washington, DC's 3,500 volunteer, city-wide Greater DC Cares project, rehabilitating
dozens of schools and recreational facilities around the city.
- South Bend, Indiana's popular Potawatomi Zoo Park, the oldest zoo in the state of
Indiana, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.

volunteers, board members and staff who will repaint 20 cabins at Camp Marshall, as well
as the dining hall, barn, and other buildings. More than 800 campers from around New
England use Camp Marshall each summer. The camp is used in the spring and fall by the Boy
Scouts of America, the Campfire Girls, 4-H youth groups, Native American groups and local
high school bands. At Camp Marshall, they strive to offer a diverse camping experience
that helps youth develop confidence and self-esteem. In addition to a wide variety of
activities -- from arts and crafts, farm animal education, archery, canoeing to nature
education and sports -- campers learn new skills and meet new friends.
Camp Building Repaint 2000 Fort Wayne, Indiana
The Red Cedar Camp and center features a United Way sponsored therapy riding program and
summer camp. This service is provided, often free of charge, for disabled children and
adults. Therapeutic riding allows disabled individuals to use muscles that will be
strengthened. Some individuals can even eventually learn to walk with this program. Red
Cedar will use Picture it Painted donated products to stain the hardwood parts of their
camp and staff buildings, and natural wood signs at their facility.
Painting of Boston Community Centers Childcare Program Boston, Massachusetts
A team of volunteers will be improving facilities for three of the Boston Community
Centers' community Child Care Program sites. This is one of the largest childcare programs
in Boston, providing over 1,100 Boston area families with quality childcare. Most of the
families participating in the program have low to moderate incomes, and the program's
mission is to help these children by encouraging their skills and abilities and
development through many creative and learning opportunities. The centers are in need of
brightening, and the Picture it Painted donated paint will help to freshen up these
facilities for the families and children that benefit from their services.
Picture it Painted for Pets in Pagosa Pagosa Springs, Colorado
The Pagosa Humane Society specializes in uniting pets with owners or new families. The
Picture it Painted award is being given to Picture it Painted for Pets in Pagosa, a
project to repaint the Humane Society shelter. The facility, which hasn't been repainted
since 1986, is overdue for a repainting, and the fresher, cleaner facility will be a more
attractive place for the homeless pets at the shelter, the people who work there, and the
families who adopt new pets.
City of Flint Community Pride Day Flint, Michigan
The city of Flint and Flint Community Schools have become partners in an initiative to
improve the looks of playgrounds and parks near the schools. Flint, a community of
140,000, has 39 elementary schools. Two school locations have a combination school
playground and neighborhood park with playground equipment. These playgrounds are used by
schoolchildren and the community for recreation. The Picture it Painted award will be used
as part of Flint's Community Pride Day, during which 300 volunteers from around the city
taking part in beautification activities, including freshening up these playgrounds, are
creating a sense of beauty and positive environment for children and families.
Centro Nueva Creacion / New Creation Community Center's Youth Xplosion 2000
Project Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Youth Xplosion 2000 project mobilizes youth and adults to fix up public spaces in
Philadelphia's Ontario Street corridor that connects several elementary schools. The
project includes painting murals with positive messages at playgrounds, recreation
centers, and other key locations. The theme for the summer is "The Beauty of
Creation," and murals being painted thanks to Picture it Painted support will reflect
that theme.
