I finally realized, after about 5 or 6 years of not being involved, that I missed
Scouting. Somebody asked me to describe myself, and, while writing that description, I
realized that the Scout Oath and the 12 points of the Scout Law made me who I am today. I
participated in two wonderful treks to Philmont Scout ranch as a youth. The first was as a
recipient of a nearly full "scholarship" donated by someone who remains unknown
to me after almost 25 years. His generosity undoubtedly shaped my life. I have since taken
4 more treks to Philmont as an adult Leader and as contingent Leader and I serve as the

I took my son to a Round-up to find out about the Tiger Cub program. I became an adult
partner in Tiger Cubs. I wanted a program that provided a social climate as well as a fun
introduction to the Boy Scout program. I was a Camp Fire Girl when I was young, and I
enjoyed the opportunities of friendship and travel; I wanted to introduce those things to

After high school, a local Troop needed an extra ASM to go on campouts and to Summer
Camp. Some boys knew that I'd been a Scout. They recruited me with the old "It's only
one hour a week and one weekend a month" routine. I fell for it and I've been insane
ever since! When my oldest boy was a Tiger Cub, my wife and I became Cub Leaders. We now
have 3 sons who are Boy Scouts - two Life and the youngest Second Class. I am the
Scoutmaster of our Troop and my wife is one of my ASM's. Our oldest boy should be
completing his Eagle requirements soon and will become an ASM next January when he turns
18. Talk about a cycle! I must mention that my dad was a Scout and my mother was a Den

a Troop Leader for Girl Scouts. I remember her taking every training possible. I was in

and always wanted to give something back to the community. There is always a need for kids

I loved Girl Scouts as a child and wanted to enjoy it with my daughter. There are so
many opportunities. I remember the difference a Girl Scout counselor made in my life. It
was a Camp Timbers in Michigan and her "camp" name was Zip. I will always
remember and love her. I hope to have the same effect on at least one other girl, if not

This was my first adult experience in Scouting. I totally enjoyed the Boy Scouts as a
youth and hoped my son would also. He began as a Tiger Cub and is a few weeks away from
crossing over into Boy Scouts. I feel that when your children are involved in any activity

concerned with the idea of being in charge. I found out later none of them had ever been
involved in Scouting and had no idea what it was all about. I took it because I knew you
had to have a Leader willing to put out some time in order for the program to work. I
decided I would do it to give my son and the other boys a chance to have fun and learn

My first adult position was member of the Troop Committee. (I had fun as a Scout.) Then
took on position as Chartered Organization Representative. I took Fast Start and Scout
Master Fundamentals to learn what / how the Pack and Troop were supposed to function. This
was a great time to meet the Council and District players. Then I became Scoutmaster after
our Troop's SM suffered a heart attack during a camporee. -P.S. - 5 yr.
My very first position was Brownie Leader. I wanted to help out a Troop that was just
starting and had to no Leader. I also wanted to give back what I got out of Scouts. I have
3 boys and my oldest just received his Bear. I got involved with his Pack when he signed
up as a Tiger. The Pack had been disbanded for years and a bunch of us got it going again.
