On this InterNETional Scouting resource site you can find some basic information about semaphore flag signaling, a skill which used to be practiced a lot in Scouting (and maybe it still is, although not everywhere).

The Semaphore flag signaling system is an alphabet signaling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern. This web site by Scouter Jim Craft in Australia shows each letter in the English Alphabet.
