Great idea to form a Venture patrol in your troop. We have had two Venture
patrols in our troop for several years (one for the 9-10th graders; one for
the 11-12 graders), but we are a big troop (60+). How you set up your
Venture patrol will really depend on the number of boys that are in the troop
and the number that are interested in Venture activities. Once you have your
Venture patrol established and have a Venture patrol leader and an Assistant
Scoutmaster-Venture in place, it is time to look at program. During normal
troop meetings, our oldest Venture patrol had classes on exotic merit badges
(the ones I would never take) like Cinematography, Crime Prevention, Auto
Mechanics, Space Exploration, Rifle Shooting (black powder). Climbing and
Backpacking. The guys in this patrol were Eagle or almost Eagle and wanted
some new challenges. The younger Venture patrol had classes on some of the
more difficult Eagle required merit badges like Personal Fitness or
Communications. In addition, we tried to have three Venture only outings a
year on the calendar. These could be a backpacking weekend, white water raft
trip, pizza and a movie...something just for them. We also tried to have a
week long high adventure trek each summer. We did form a Venture Crew using
as its core the older Venture patrol last September and it is growing!
At the district level, we run a Venture, Varsity, Venturing roundtable that
presents program ideas for older scouts. We also run a Venture Hike-o-ree in
the fall of each year that attracts over 700 Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts,
Venturers, and Girl Scouts. This will be our tenth year of running the
Hike-o-ree which continues to grow. Finally, in the spring of each year, we
run a Venture Leader Training course. This two week night, one weekend
course provides the Assistant Scoutmaster-Venture with the skills to plan and
conduct safe and challenging outdoor activities for older scouts.
Venture has been pretty successful in the National Capitial Area Council and
has kept many of our older scouts active longer and advancing.
