Introduction

Greetings from England!
Having been a list lurker now for a little while, I thought it was time I
said hello!

My name is Lucy, and I am a Guide leader in England - yes, I'm one of the
opposition!
Personal bio - I'm 27, been in Guiding now for 20 yrs, gained my Queens
Guide award, and am Division International Adviser. I come from a
Guiding/Scouting family - whilst my father has no interest at all in
Scouting, my Granddad was a Scouter/Commissioner for many years and my mum
has run almost everything in her time - cubs, brownies, scouts,
guides........ they are both wood-badgers. Hubby is a registered Unit Helper
with my Guide unit, but has never really been into Scouting.I am also a
member of the WAGGGS-L & Guiding-L lists and whilst they are very valuable,
I am finding that the Scouts-List is giving me some great ideas - UK Guiding
has as much in common with Boy Scouting as Girl Scouting. Whilst I'm one of
the "true blues", I have done many activities with Scouts, and have been on
leadership teams at Scouting events & camps numerous times. I have no kids
unless you count a very active unit of 27 Guides aged 10 - 15!. We currently
have 2 Guiders, and a Young Leader who will turn 18 in October - to signify
her becoming an adult, we will present her with her Guiders uniform!
We are desperately fundraising at the moment to take the girls to Ireland
next year.
I think that's it about me .........

I planning on running a Patrol Leaders/seconds training for my unit & one
other unit (hopefully there will be 8 leaders, & 8 seconds(assistant P-L's)
) in September & I would really appreciate any ideas you have! This is
something that hasn't really been done much round here & I'm determined to
get my P-L's working "properly" (we do have a slight problem in that UK
Guides finish at 14/15 and my PL's are 14, or almost 14 - so obviously
things will be somewhat different that where you have 16/17yr old P-L's.)
Two of my P-L's have just gained their B-P trefoil (highest award in Guide
section - Queens Guide is for senior section) and are likely to stay with us
for at least 1 more year. Another P-L has slight learning difficulties
(mostly reading/writing) but is working hard to get her B-P soon! The fourth
P-L will be elected next week - I guess she will be one of our 12 yr
olds......
Hopefully after this training session (5pm Sat - 9am Sunday & yes we do need
to sleep in there somewhere!) we can hand over all advancements to the
P-L's, get them to run their own activities during meetings, look after
patrol equipment etc.... basically start to get things a little bit more
girl-run. They prefer things to be adult run at the moment, and the younger
ones do need that, but I do want to get them to see that girl-run is as
good, if not better! We won't change things overnight, though hopefully by
the time our 10 yr olds get to be P-L's, the system will be working
properly!
Any ideas you have about things we could/should be covering in our P-L
training would be appreciated, particularly with what to do with the
seconds!

Yours in Guiding/Scouting
