Dear List:
I am happy to report we recently had a page 3 article on our first cub-annapolis
in our local paper. I've known the reporter for a number of years through my
employer (municipal govt.) and her son was an Eagle many years ago. When I
mentioned the upcoming event to her, she was thrilled to cover a community
related story. I figured we might get a paragraph, but not close to an entire
page - with pictures yet! She came out on a 95+ degree, humid Midwest Sunday
afternoon, snapped a few shots and talked to the boys.
Remember, most of the press cover municipal meetings and if you can get mentioned
at one for providing a service to the community, maybe having the Mayor sign a
proclamation for an upcoming event, etc. the press, especially the print media,
will be more co-operative. Keep your elected officials informed of the good
service Scouts perform. Even invite them to attend your functions as honored
guests. If you don't let them know that you're there, who will?
On a another matter re: Positve PR, I've been told not to hand out flyers
advertising the School Night to Join Scouting during our local Labor Day parade.
This would not cost the council/pack anything. I would be donating the entire
cost of printing. The only reason for the objection from the DE is that, It is
not part of the "plan" previously established. One person said it sounded like
an enfringement upon my rights not to be able to do this. The group that runs the
parade said they had no problem with the flyers. Any ideas as to what's up?
