Instead of fighting to get an article into the local newspapers, if you
contact a local TV or Cable station you will get better results.
If there is no major news a local station will run a fill. If they deem it
newsworthy, it will go in more often. The best time to start this
relationship is 30 to 60 days before the winter district camp out. (Hope for
lots of snow or close to zero temperatures.) Give them all the info about
what will take place plus who, what, where, and when. Invite them to join in,
learn and have some fun. Make sure that you have both youth and adults to
show them around and get them the correct information.
If they run it on the news, contact all the local papers and ask them who
should be the contact person so they won't miss out next time. Give them a
story and some pictures. Even if they can't run it this time, they probably
will next time.
