Re: breach of trust

As a Brownie Leader who is just now knee deep in cookie orders I
shudder at the thought of the troop losing that much money if a
parent chooses to keep the cookie money. More important, of course
is the daughter of the family who refuses to pay for the cookies.
How awful for that child to face her friends knowing that they will
blame her for the loss of their funds!

In our council (Orange County, California) a parent must sign a
permission slip accepting responsibility for any cookies that they
take - this is even before their daughter is given an order form!
The parents must count and sign for the cookies they get to fill
their daughters pre-order. If we ever have the situation that you
now are faced with, we have a definite trail of responsibility
leading to the parents.

We have had the situation where a girls' cookie customer has
written a large check to the troop which bounced and they refused to
pay. Our council urges us to require that all checks be made out
to the brownies parents who then write one check to the troop. I
do not believe that parents should be made to assume this
responsibility and I don't require this.

I would urge your daughters troop leader to consult with her
council representative. I'm certain that each council has been
through this before and has a plan in place.

I wish that troop the best of luck.
