Hello All,
Well, this thread raises it's ugly head every couple of months. I have
refrained until now from adding to it, but Keith Tilley and some other's
comments were worth responding to. I agree that we all make up our
councils and therefore when we refuse to participate in FOS and other
council fundraisers we could end up hurting ourselves. However, I also
agree with those that have problems with the "Council" and want to send
some kind of message to indicate their disaproval. The problem is that,
while yes the Council Board is also made up of volunteers in in theory
these individuals are the Senior Executives bosses, the reality is that
many on those boards are "hand picked" by the proffessional staff. So
once agian like everywhere else in life we are dealing with politics. The
other problem is the "out of touch" phenomina that is prevalent in the
volunteers at the Council level. They don't deal with the units, they
don't deal with the boys they don't deal with the real volunteers down at
that unit level and really only deal with an elite few at the District
level. No wonder the majority of your volunteers respond to "Council" the
way they do. The question is, How do we make that council board more
representative of the grass-roots and how do we cut through all the
politics? Gee, if we could figure that out we might even be able to
suggest improvements to the government as well.
