<<Rhett Skelton asks about BSA Abbreviations:>>

Welcome to the list, Rhett! Abbreviations can be confusing but don't worry.
After a week or two you'll be doing 'Scoutspeak" like a veteran. BTW, If
you have questions other newcommers might too, so I thought I'd post
this to the general list.

Boy Scout Abbreviations
BOR -- Board of Review, final step in obtaining next rank
COR -- Chartered Organization Representative -- go-between for the troop
COH -- Court of Honor, the formal presentation of advancement to boys, usually
3-4 x per year, and attended by parents
JLT -- Junior Leader Training, a leadership course for youth with a troop
position.
PL/APL- Patrol Leader/Assistant Patrol Ldr. Boy leaders in charge of a group of
6-10 scouts who work together within the larger troop. Patrol Competetions,
etc
strengthen the patrol bond or 'spirit'
YIS -- Yours In Scouting, a favorite sign-off
WWW -- A favorite sign off of people who have been honored with election to
the Order of the Arrow, a service group of campers within the BSA.
ASM -- Assistant Scoutmaster
SM -- Scoutmaster, adult leader, answers to the troop committee.
CC -- Comittee Chairperson, head of the troop committee (adults)
SPL -- Senior Patrol Leader. The youth elected to the highest leadership
position within the troop. The SPL should actually do more talking than the
SM. (not just "shut up, sit down, Mr --- wants to talk", either!)
DE, CE -- District Executive, Council Executive. Paid professional staff members
who help volunteer leaders within geographic districts and councils to put
on
the scouting program for youth. DE's work for the CE.
WoodBadge -- A high-intensity adult leader training course. The highest level
of adult training available for volunteers.
Ticket - The second phase of the WoodBadge course, where participants return
to their Scouting position and put what they have learned into action.
"I used to be a (animal)" -- The WoodBadge patrol or group this individual
was a member of. There are a lot of lifetime friendships among patrol
members, even in different courses. Thus the pride in advertising your
affiliation.
NE V1-16 SR-177 EC-424 -- These are the course numbers for Wood Badge
assigned by National/Region when a council is given permission to run a
course.
The alpha characters correspond to the BSA Region where the course was
offered, the numbers, the sequential couse. Thus, SR-177 will be the 177th
course offered by the Southern Region (April 96 in Shreveport LA, ask for
details!!)
Don't hesitate to ask about other abberviations, we want you to get everything
you can out of this list!
