First, let me say thanks to all of you who took the time to drop me a
note on my concerns of the benefit vs. expense of the Cub Wood Badge Course.
I have been out of town for the last week and since I have not the time
(have to get caught up at work and in scouts) I will use this forum to say
thanks.
As you might have been able to tell by those responses I received via the
list, there are some very deep feelings about Woodbadge - both from a content
and fellowship stand point. Those responses I received privately further
supported that same idea. I think that is great! Scouting is about
fellowship and about skills. Make no mistake of my intentions in attending
this course - helping to provide a quality program to the leaders of
tomorrow. I am dedicated to the spirit, idea, principals of the program and
delivering the same to the boys is one of my "vigils". However, I am not
interested in self-recognition. As a businessman (that's not all bad), I
tend to look at things a little differently. I think we should be looking
"outside the box". If this course presents me with half of what many of you
have told me - then - it will be a "sound investment."
I am also very happy with the healthy discussion my little questions have
transformed into. Uniformity, content, spirit and all the things that have
been discussed are what we need to be doing to insure we are delivering a
quality program. We must be examining the what and questioning the why - not
to find fault - but instead, stepping back to insure we are on the right
track for our youth of today and those of tomorrow. Scouting is not here for
me; its for the youth of today to take in and make it even better for their
youth and so on and so on.
In closing I say thanks again and leave you with a this little ditty - I
pass this way not to make a new trail, but to provide a path by which new
trails can start. See you after Woodbadge!

Your in the Spirit and Brotherhood of Scouting,

Arnie Carlsen
