Eagle Scout Projects

Craig Miller asked for ideas for winter Eagle projects. I am also
interested in hearing about eagle projects. If you send things privately
to him please send them to me too. I got a lot of information on the
Life-to-Eagle transition from the cyberroundtable web page, but
surprisingly there was very little on how to find and choose a suitable
project.

We have a number of Life Scouts in our troop age 15-16 and I am now trying
to set up a program to insure that they will be able to finish off the
merit badge requirements in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, in the past
the boys tended to procrastinate. The last 4 or 5 eagles finished up just
a few months (or weeks) before their 18th birthdays. I am going to try a
"management by objectives" approach. Each scout will start by making a
program listing the merit badges that he needs and assigning a target date
for completion. We will then make up teams so that the boys can work on
their badges together. Each month we will ask the boys to examine their
program to see if they are keeping up. One of the hardest things for many
the boys to do seems to be taking the initiative to call up a stranger and
talk to him on the phone. However, our scoutmaster insists (and I agree)
that this skill is one of the things that we are trying to teach the boys.
But perhaps having the responsibility to call up for the "team" that is
working on a merit badge together will provide some incentive.

The next job will be to try to organize the choosing of Eagle projects. I
hope that we will have six or seven going on by summer.
