About the Blue and Gold Banquet.

In our Pack, we have never (in the four years I have been involved) had Cub
Scouts provide entertainment for the B&G. In the past we have had adult
leaders and Boy Scouts provide the entertainment. This year we talked about
hiring entertainment, but we are trying a combined B&G/Court of Honor with
our brother Troop and this coupled with the SME presentation and Summer Camp
presentations won't leave much time for entertainment.

Yes, you are right that this should be "the boys' party". They can derive
ownership by helping with the invitations, centerpieces, etc. As far as
showcasing their accomplishments, this can be done via display tables set up
in the hall. I don't feel that the boys need to be up "on stage" for them to
feel that this is their party. We have the boys do skits and songs every
month at Pack meetings, so not having to provide the entertainment is a
treat for them, they can sit back and watch and enjoy.

Another thing that we do, which will no doubt get me some hot replies (flame
proof suit donned), is that we do not present any youth awards
(badges of rank, sports loops/pins, Webelos Activity pins, etc.) at the Blue
and Gold, with the sole exception of Arrow of Light Awards.
This gives the AOL recipients an extra sense of accomplishments as the only
other awards presented are "Appreciation Awards" given to the adult leaders.
Any other youth awards are held until the March Pack meeting. Now before you
write back about how we are robbing the boys of their deserved recognition,
we got the idea for this from our Council Scout Executive (I can hear the
jaws hitting the keyboards now).

Remember, when planning your B&G, there are no rules carved in stone. Feel
free to use your own ingenuity to customize your banquet to your Pack's
needs. Also, remember that a celebration FOR the boys does not have to mean
that it is a celebration BY the boys. Have fun, and KISMIF!
