Cultural cross-pollenization appears to be the order of the day. My
predecessor Skipper was Michael Curran born and raised in Kerry. Our yawl
"Thor's Hammer" was originally "Cu-na-mara" (Gaelic for "hound of the sea")
donated by a Dr. Cooney. As a descendant of Yorkshiremen who were part of the
Viking colony of Danelaw in England, I often teased Curran from Kerry that the
bad press the Vikings received was merely Irish monk propaganda designed to
increase their hazardous duty pay. I often added that a Viking Sea Scout Ship
could keep a vessel with a Gaelic name and maintain historical accuracy by
merely treating it as booty.
We have had Boyles and Collinses and Clearys and Horrigans and Slivas, so it
is never clear to me who got the upper hand aboard this particular Viking
organization. I also recommend Severin's The Brendan Voyage to the rare
American teenager who reads. Oh yes, and Patrick O'Brien. And Heyerdahl's Kon-
tiki. So culturally who knows who won, but the groups are definitely
inextricably intertwined.
Personally I admire any nationality that goes to sea in heavy turtleneck
sweaters. Both nationalities score high in that department.
Yours in Sea Scouting,
Roger Crossland
